The Community Foundation announces over $600,000 in new grants; more than $19.5 million given since formation

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announced today a total of more than $600,000 in new grants to 47 non-profit community agencies at a reception at the Ringgold Volunteer Fire and Rescue. The Community Foundation was incorporated in 1996 and has already returned more than $21.5 million in community grants and scholarships.

This year’s grants contain $260,000 in funding made available by a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation. A complete listing of the grants awarded from the Danville Regional Foundation’s support is below.

The following grants were awarded from various funds as described below

The Community Impact Fund is made up of the following unrestricted funds: James Russell Anderson and Zora Carter Anderson Endowment Fund, Buck- Wayland Fund, Faith Home Endowment Fund, Clarence L. Giles Fund, Harry Melton Hood Fund, Elizabeth (Betty) W. Jefferson Fund, D. Webster, Jr., and Elizabeth S. Marshall Fund, James A. and Anne V. Robertson Fund, Barbara H. Sater and Herbert W. Sater Memorial Fund, and John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund

Cascade School Community Center ($5,200) To install a rubber roof over the flat part of their building. (Community Impact Fund)

Caswell Family Medical ($25,000) To secure digital radiology equipment. The new equipment will replace analog equipment that has long surpassed its life expectancy and will provide instant access to digital images that will be shared via computer interface. (Community Impact Fund)

Caswell Pet Lifeline ($4,500) To purchase necessary crates and carriers required for the clinic. (Community Impact Fund)

Chatham Fire Department ($9,000) To purchase three sets of NFPA 1971-2013 compliant proximity firefighting protective ensembles (coat, pants, boots, gloves, hood and helmet) to replace obsolete equipment. (W. Earl & Elise M. G. Allen Fund)

City of Danville-Fire Department ($10,000) To cover the cost of mental health workshops for emergency first responders and telecommunicators, travel for the instructors, handouts, and incidentals. (Community Impact Fund)

City of Danville-Parks and Recreation ($14,000) To purchase transportation service in the form of one-way trips from the Fresenius Medical Center (Danville Dialysis Clinic) for Danville City residents that are under the age of 60. (Community Impact Fund)

Claire Parker Foundation ($20,000) To support the Care Box Mission. Care boxes are stocked at each of their hospitals so families receiving a pediatric cancer diagnosis are tended to immediately. Funds will also be used to purchase iPads for children’s chemo packs that are provided in September (Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month). (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Area Choral Arts Society ($2,000) To pay expenses incurred for the presentation of Handel’s Messiah including, but not limited to, compensation for music director, accompanist, and string quartet, cost of venue donation, custodian, programs, and publicity. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Area Humane Society ($8,000) To purchase new resting beds and pallets for the dog runs in the shelter. (Community Impact Fund; Animal Welfare Fund)

Danville Community College Educational Foundation ($12,000) To purchase additional equipment for the Dental Hygiene program to support the largest student cohort ever in the college’s Dental Hygiene program. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Concert Association ($3,500) To offer a four-day Artist-in-Residence Program, conducted by the 5 member American Chamber Players, for area students in the public (and several private) schools in Danville and Pittsylvania County. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Family YMCA ($10,000) To purchase an InBody 570 body fat screening machine to help in accessing the members overall health. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Pittsylvania Cancer ($30,000) To support the Patient-Aid services which are used to reimburse or assist local cancer patients in obtaining their cancer-related prescriptions. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity ($25,000) To support the construction of 343 Bell Drive, Danville, as part of the DCC Neighborhood revitalization project. (Community Impact Fund; Daniel Fund)

Danville Science Center ($24,500) To offer compelling and varied content through traveling exhibits to successfully and repeatedly engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds. (Community Impact Fund; Faye Carter Fund; Daniel Fund)

Danville Speech and Hearing ($20,000) To pay for needed speech therapy services due to the lack of insurance, high deductibles or co-pays, or lack of coverage for services by their insurance carrier. (Community Impact Fund)

Institute for Advanced Learning and Research ($13,444) To purchase 17 Surface Pro 4 Tablets that would be used on the new mobile STEM lab which will debut March 2017. The new tablets will allow students to use advanced coding, gaming, and design applications in support of developing their interest and learning in the STEM disciplines. Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc. ($4,000) To support the Virginia Outreach Education program which will offer an interactive educational experience to about 650 students from Danville City and Martinsville City public schools, bringing 17th and 18th century history to life in the classroom. Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center ($20,000) To purchase food for the local community for monthly distribution. The food purchases will support efforts to feed 250 families each month. (Community Impact Fund)

Pittsylvania County Department of Social Services ($22,000) To assist Pittsylvania County residents with emergency services, such as electricity, rent, or heat, during a CRISIS situation such as eviction, utility disconnection or no heat. (Community Impact Fund)

Providence Fire and Rescue ($8,000) To purchase new SCBA bottles that will replace obsolete/expired bottles from their equipment. (Community Impact Fund)

Quickstart Tennis of Central Virginia ($4,000) To purchase tennis equipment (racquets, balls, and portable nets) for schools and youth-centric organizations in Danville and Pittsylvania County. (Community Impact Fund)

Southern Area Agency on Aging ($25,000) To provide supplemental supportive assistance to older adults in Danville or Pittsylvania County. (Community Impact Fund)

SPCA of Pittsylvania County ($6,500) To help with the cost of vetting cats and dogs. The program will include preventive care vetting as well as spay and neuter of rescue animals. (Community Impact Fund; Irving H. and Louise Hambrick Scarce Animal Fund; Audrey Millner Fund)

United Way of Danville Pittsylvania County ($12,000) To support the Dan River Nonprofit Network with resources to improve area nonprofit effectiveness. This investment in equipping the Network with resources will support over 100 regional nonprofit agencies to better achieve their philanthropic missions. (Community Impact Fund)

The following grants were awarded as a result of The Community Foundation’s grantmaking partnership with Danville Regional Foundation.

Air Force Association (AFA), Chapter 240 ($3,000) To provide “Matching Grant” funding to city and county K-12 S.T.E.M. teachers.

Averett University ($23,350) To purchase chemistry equipment which will contribute to the new STEM education degrees and career pathways for the region.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Danville Area ($10,400) To provide support and training for the youth in the program. The workshops will deal with personal safety, bullying, and gun safety. In addition, the youth, parents, and volunteers will be informed about drug/alcohol use and abuse. (Faye Carter Fund; Pat & Cathy Daly Fund)

Boys & Girls Club of the Danville Area ($20,000) To support the full implementation of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America program Building Blocks locally. Funds will support program supplies such as tablets, consumables for program and hands-on projects, 3D printer, and engineering software and downloadable apps. Callands Volunteer Fire and Rescue ($10,000) To purchase two new thermal imaging cameras, as well as a piston intake valve, a 2 ½ inch fire hose nozzle, and a specialty piercing fire hose nozzle.

Caswell County Partnership for Children ($3,000) To offer more specialized instruction and to enhance instruction through the use of computers and software programs for tutors to utilize with students in self-directed online learning.

Casville Volunteer Fire Department ($5,000) To purchase a vehicle stabilization strut kit to stabilize vehicles in accidents where the vehicle was on a hill, embankment or on its side. Also, to purchase a plastic cribbing kit to assist in preventing vehicles from moving to assist in extraction.

Community Improvement Council ($1,745) To provide all 12 classrooms with a variety of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) materials.

Danville Historical Society ($15,500) To purchase museum-quality portable walls to create exhibition and display areas. (Daniel Fund)

Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History ($10,500) To present a four evening, multi-generational experience. Danville has the opportunity to host a Chautauqa tent event by sponsoring historical interpreters in first-person performances outside the Sutherlin Mansion.

Danville Pittsylvania Community Services ($20,000) To assist low-income, high-need individuals, ages of 16 and older with mental health, substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders, when they cannot afford medications crucial for maintaining stability and counteracting relapse.

Danville Symphony Orchestra ($6,000) To defray a portion (one quarter) of the direct costs of a few season concerts. (Daniel Fund)

Feeding America Southwest Virginia ($15,000) To combat the rising levels of food insecurity in Danville and Pittsylvania County by supporting the efforts of Feeding America Southwest Virginia’s Food Distribution Program. (Community Impact Fund)

First Tee of Danville (First Tee of the Triad) ($12,500) To fund 30 participants in the program for the 2017. It will also assist in providing 10 outreach training opportunities which will expand opportunities from the National School program into other elementary schools. The remaining funds will be used for training supplies.

Free Clinic of Danville ($25,000) To purchase ophthalmology and dental equipment that will allow more precise diagnosis and more effective treatment for eye and dental patients. Additionally, funds will support a portion of medical supply costs of providing ophthalmological and dental care to patients at the Free Clinic. (Daniel Fund)

God’s Storehouse ($24,300) To purchase food for customers and food for the Malcolm Huckabee Backpacks program, as well as money to repair a freezer door for the walk in freezer in the warehouse, and to replace the roll-up door on a small box truck. (Ahmed Children’s Fund; Daniel Fund)

Mount Hermon Volunteer Fire and Rescue ($10,000) To replace 3 sets of turnout gear (bunker gear) that no longer meet safety regulations according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Pelham Volunteer Fire Department ($10,000) To purchase equipment for ISO North Carolina Response Rating System. Some funds will be used to purchase an additional power supply for eDraulic rescue tool and to purchase helmets for junior firefighters.

Ringgold Volunteer Fire and Rescue ($10,000) To purchase a Ferno Auto Lift Stretcher.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC ($12,000) To enhance capacity of six Caswell County feeding programs.

Tunstall Fire and Rescue ($7,000) To purchase two new electric positive pressure fans.

Yanceyville Volunteer Fire and Rescue ($10,000) To purchase a battery over hydraulic mobile combination cutter/spreader extrication tool for use when the hydraulic hoses won’t reach the patient or when they patient is in a remote location not accessible by fire truck apparatus.
