THE IRENE L. PRITCHETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

 

THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION , serving Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County, is pleased to announce the availability of the Irene L. Pritchett Memorial Scholarship.  The purpose of the fund is to provide grants to an accredited college, university or seminary, or grants to educational organizations qualifying as 501 (c) (3) organizations for the benefit of deserving black graduates of the senior high schools of the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County and The Children’s Home of Virginia Baptist, Inc.

Students who would like to be considered for the scholarship program should send one (1) copy of the completed application and supporting documents to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION on or before March 28, 2003.

IRENE L. PRITCHETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

 

About the Program

 

The purpose of this scholarship is to support post-secondary educational scholarships for qualifying high school graduates or candidates for graduation.  The Irene L. Pritchett Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to students who best exemplify a commitment to academics and school and community service activities. 

 

Who is Eligible?

 

1.   Black students who are eligible must demonstrate a good academic record, a financial need, and a commitment to school and community activities.

 

2.      Applicants must be black graduates from a secondary school in the City of Danville, Pittsylvania County or the Children’s Home of Virginia at the end of the current academic year, and plan to enroll in an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or seminary in the United States the following academic year.

 

Nomination procedure

If a student meets the preceding eligibility criteria, he/she must submit:  1) the Irene L. Pritchett Memorial Scholarship Application form;  2) high school transcript and recent SAT/Achievement scores;  3) letter of recommendation from a faculty member;  4) list of extracurricular activities and community services;  5) list of academic honors;  6) information about outstanding financial aid applications, if any;  7) post-secondary academic interests;  8) a brief statement describing his/her commitment to classmates and personal goals; and 9) any other information which may be helpful to the selection committee. PLEASE NOTE: THE APPLICANT MUST SUBMIT IN ADVANCE TO POTENTIAL COLLEGES THE ATTACHED DEMONSTRATION OF FINANCIAL NEED FORM.

The application and accompanying forms must be received by March 28, 2003.

 

How Winners are Chosen

The selection committee for the Irene L. Pritchett Memorial Scholarship will evaluate qualified candidates on three criteria:

            1.         Academic achievement will be evaluated based on grade point                                                   average, SAT scores and academic honors; and

            2.         Financial need based on the completed financial aid forms and                                                   information regarding pending scholarship applications, if any;  and

            3.         Involvement in extracurricular and community services;

 

Finalists may have an opportunity to meet with, and be interviewed by, the members of the Irene L. Pritchett Memorial Scholarship selection committee.

IMPORTANT: All applicants for the Irene L. Pritchett Memorial Scholarship MUST complete the top section of this form and send it in advance to each college being considered.  Part II of this application should be completed, signed and forwarded by the applicant to the college's Financial Aid Office, in conjunction with the applicant's regular submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The college will then submit the completed form.
