Guidelines for Applications
THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION , serving
General Intent
The Scholarship Fund was established to help dedicated students reach
their educational goals. It seeks to reward students who actively support their
religious convictions, and are passionate about their education, plan carefully
for their future, work tirelessly to attain their educational goals, and
demonstrate a drive to improve their communities – all qualities embodied by
Percy and Velna Scearce.
Scholarships may be awarded to support any level of post high school
educational goals, to include attendance at trade schools, colleges,
universities, and postgraduate schools.
Scholarships may be awarded on “need-based” criteria, with consideration
given to academic achievement and to the student’s personal commitment and
future plans.
Eligibility
Any student who intends
to pursue full-time or part-time education in the academic year following their
application is eligible for consideration and award. Applicants should have
completed high school, or expect to complete high school by June of the
application year. Race, gender, religious preference, or disabilities do not
influence eligibility or selection for awards. Winners are eligible to apply
for and receive renewed funding towards any single educational goal for up to
four years.
Students who would
like to be considered for the scholarship program should please send one (1)
copy of the completed application and supporting documents to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION on or before
Size of Available Awards
Individual
scholarships awarded under the Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship Fund will be
determined according to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION ’s grant guidelines and
policies. It is anticipated that annual scholarships of up to $2,000 will be
awarded. All awards will be for tuition assistance and will be paid directly to
the educational institution.

Application Process
If a student
meets the preceding eligibility criteria, he/she must submit:
1)
The Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship Application
form;
2)
Transcript of grades from high school (if within the
past 5 years)
3)
Transcript of their most recent year of study (if
other than high school and within the past 5 years)
4)
Standardized test scores, as appropriate (SAT or ACT
for post-secondary study; GRE, LSAT, MCTA, GMAT or other appropriate test
scores for post-graduate study)
5)
List of extracurricular activities and community
services
6)
A recommendation from a faculty member or employer
7)
Narrative responses to all questions presented on
the application
8)
Any other information which may be helpful to the
selection committee.
The application and accompanying forms must be received
by March 28, 2003.
Finalists may have an
opportunity to meet with, and be interviewed by, the members of the Percy and
Velna Scearce Scholarship selection committee.

any and all information submitted as a part of this application will be held in
the highest confidence and will not be revealed outside THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION .

School Seniors who apply for the Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship

section of this form for each institution being considered. Part II of this application should be
completed, signed and forwarded by the applicant to the college's Financial
Aid Office, in conjunction with the applicant's regular submission of the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The college will then submit the
completed form.
