The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region has received a $1.375 million bequest from the estate of Roy L. Doss. The gift will establish the Roy L. and Mary G. Doss Scholarship Fund to benefit Danville and Pittsylvania County students.

Mr. Doss worked as an electrician and also served in the U.S. Navy in World War II., where he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and in the Amphibious Force. The Danville native died December 12, 2009 and was predeceased by his wife, Mary.

“What a wonderful legacy the Doss family has left for area students,” said Debra Dodson, Executive Director of The Community Foundation. “The Doss Scholarship will certainly make a difference when we begin our next scholarship cycle in February 2011.”

The Community Foundation Awards More than $160,000 in Scholarships to 71 Area Students

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region has awarded more than $168,000 in scholarships to 71 area students. Presentations were recently made from 26 different scholarship funds within The Community Foundation at a scholarship reception held May 23, 2010 at Danville Education, Arts and Cultural Center.

“We are so excited to help open the doors of the future to so many students,” said Debra L. Dodson, Executive Director for The Community Foundation. “We have awarded nearly $1,314,000 in scholarships to 459 students since the Foundation was begun in 1996.”

Community Foundation Introduces Fund for Halifax County

The Fund for Halifax County was introduced April 21 at a Chamber “Business After Hours” hosted by The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region with The Prizery.

The Fund for Halifax County is a unique opportunity for citizens, organizations and businesses to help build an endowment to improve and enrich lives in Halifax County. The Community Foundation will continue to encourage donations of all sizes and types as it seeks to reach the minimum endowment of $10,000.

Major General Carroll Thackston presented the Foundation with the first gift for The Fund for Halifax County. Thackston has served on the Community Foundation Board of Directors for six years.

L. Samuel Saunders, president of the Foundation Board, explained that a local committee would help advise on grant awards from the Fund, once the minimum endowment is reached.

The Community Foundation Announces $878,800 in New Grants

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announced today a total of $878,800 in new grants to 56 non-profit community agencies at a reception at the Ballou Recreation Center. This is the twelfth year of operation for the Foundation, with total grants returned to the community now more than $10 million.

This year’s grants contain $500,000 in funding made available by a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation.

Grants Available for Workforce Partnerships Focused on Green Skills

The Dan River Region Collaborative (“DRR Collaborative”) announced today that it is now accepting proposals that seek to improve employment, training, and labor market outcomes in the area of green skills.

The DRR Collaborative seeks to improve both the quality of jobs and the capacity of workers by promoting change at three levels: individual, institution, and system. The result: better jobs, better workers, and a better workforce development system.

The Dan River Region Collaborative, which was formed in the summer of 2008, serves approximately 150,000 people in Pittsylvania, Halifax, Henry, and Patrick counties and the cities of Danville and Martinsville. As a new regional funding entity, the Collaborative’s key funding partners, to date, include The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, The Danville Regional Foundation, The Harvest Foundation, J.T.-Minnie Maude Charitable Trust, and the Virginia Tobacco Commission. These investors, along with the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, will capitalize this effort with $1.5 million. A principle strategy of the DRR collaborative is to increase the number of local and regional workforce partnerships.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is now accepting applications for the Bobby Hawker Memorial Fund.

The Bobby Hawker Memorial Fund’s purpose is to continue his passion of enriching the lives of individuals affected by HIV and AIDS and their families. Applications are also being sought from 501c3 charitable organizations offering services to these individuals in Danville, Pittsylvania and Caswell Counties.

Workforce Collaborative Awards $97,000 to Train Residential Energy Auditors Across Region

The Dan River Region Collaborative announced today its first grant of $97,000 to provide local green jobs training. Eight regional organizations have formed the RESNET Training Partnership to provide residential energy auditor training for 45 incumbent and unemployed workers. Partner organizations include: the City of Danville, the City of Martinsville, Danville Community College, the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR), Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative, Patrick Henry Community College, Pittsylvania County Community Action, Inc. and the West Piedmont Workforce Investment Board.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is now accepting proposals for its next round of grant making. This is the thirteenth year the Foundation has awarded discretionary community grants, with over $7.7 million having been distributed so far.

Information has already been mailed to approximately 300 community non-profit organizations in Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County. The Foundation is accepting Preliminary Request applications from 501c3 charitable organizations until July 23, 2009. The Preliminary Request applications should include a brief overview of the proposed project. The Foundation’s Distribution Committee will then select which organizations to ask to submit full grant applications.

With the help of a generous gift of $500,000 from the Danville Regional Foundation, the Community Foundation will have over $800,000 available for grants this year. Up to 50% of the Danville Regional Foundation funding will be earmarked for healthcare and human services.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region has awarded over $163,000 in scholarships to 65 area students. Presentations were recently made from 25 different scholarship funds within The Community Foundation at a scholarship reception held May 31, 2009 at Danville Education, Arts and Cultural Center.

The Dan River Foundation announced today the transfer of nearly $3 million in assets to The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. A new Dan River Inc. Endowment Fund will continue the charitable work of the company based in Danville for over 100 years.

“We are pleased to be able to partner with The Community Foundation to permanently earmark these funds to support charitable work in the Dan River Region,” said Rodney Reynolds, chairman of the Fund’s advisory committee. “During its 126 year history, Dan River Inc. was a responsible and generous corporate citizen, providing support to charitable organizations throughout the Dan River Region and sponsoring scholarships for many children of Dan River employees. The Dan River Inc. Endowment Fund will make certain that this support continues. It will assure that the good name of Dan River Inc. is preserved and will honor the thousands of employees of Dan River throughout the years whose dedication allowed the Company to become a global leader in the home fashions and apparel fabrics industries.”
