Community Foundation awards surprise grant to Danville Public Library at Legacy Society Reception

DANVILLE, VA- A surprise grant of $3,000 was awarded to the Danville Public Library by The Community Foundation of the Dan River at a June 15 Legacy Society Reception at the Foundation office. The grant is in honor of the Foundation’s 20th anniversary and will be used to make reading materials available to children in our community and to foster a culture around reading.

“The Board of The Community Foundation search for a way to give several small grants across our region which could have broad impact. We could find no better project than to support summer reading programs at all the area libraries,” said Debra L. Dodson, Executive Director. Four grants totaling $12,000 were awarded to libraries in Pittsylvania County, Caswell County, Halifax-South Boston and Danville.

Donors, organizations or businesses may start their own endowment funds for as little as $10,000 and scholarships for $25,000. Once a fund is established anyone can make designated gifts to that fund.

The Legacy Society is a way for The Community Foundation to honor those who have made a lasting commitment to the Dan River Region. Individuals who designate a gift to The Community Foundation through a will, trust, retirement plan beneficiary or other planned gift are invited to join the Legacy Society.

Online grant applications for 501c3 community agencies in Danville-Pittsylvania-Caswell County are now open at www.cfdrr.org with a July 28 deadline. The next scholarship application cycle will begin January 1, 2018 and will also be available at www.cfdrr.org.

Community Foundation awards 100 Scholarships totaling more than $195,000 to area students

DANVILLE,VA – The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region has awarded 100 scholarships totaling more than $195,000 to area students. Presentations from 46 different scholarship funds within The Community Foundation were made at a scholarship reception held June 11, 2017 at The Community Center in Chatham. The Community Foundation has awarded 950 scholarships totaling more than $2 million since its beginning in 1996.

The Adkerson-Dodson Special Education Scholarship was established in 2012 in memory of Elsie Carolyn Adkerson and in memory of Robert Edward Adkerson and Elsie Herndon Adkerson. The scholarship supports deserving Danville/Pittsylvania residents who have a need for financial support and who are pursuing an undergraduate degree or licensure in special education. Katherine Johnson (Averett University) received $800.

The William E. Barr Scholarship was established in 2013 in memory of William E. Barr. The scholarship supports Danville – Pittsylvania County graduates attending Hampden-Sydney College. Nicholas Collins (Hampden-Sydney College) received $1,100.

The Bennett-Bushnell-Jones-Kaufmann Scholarship was established in 2008 to provide scholarships to second-year nursing students at Danville Community College. Two scholarships of $850 each were awarded to Brittany Hopkins (Danville Community College) and Missy Tipton (Danville Community College).

The Deputy Frankie Lynn Betterton Scholarship was established in 2012 in memory of Deputy Sherriff Frankie Lynn Betterton who was shot and killed while making a traffic stop on May 17, 2002. The scholarship is for Danville/Pittsylvania residents who have a financial need and who are pursuing a law enforcement career. Jacob Reynolds (Tunstall High School) received $700.

The James W. Bryant, Sr. and James T. Collie Scholarship was established in 2005 by a retired school teacher. The scholarship is for Pittsylvania County Public Schools graduates, with a preference for those pursuing education or nursing. Three scholarships of $2,300 each were awarded to Veronica Berrios (Chatham High School), Erika Dodson (James Madison University), and Katie Loomis (Tunstall High School).

The Bernard C. Calvert Scholarship was established in 2004 by the Brosville Council #51 of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. The scholarship is restricted to Tunstall High School graduates, preferably students who attended either Brosville or Stony Mill Schools. Lauren Yoder (Campbell University) received $1,700.

The John Watson Daniel Scholarship was established by the JWD Retirement Club in 1997. A scholarship in the amount of $850 was presented to Bailey Gray (North Carolina State University).

The Steven Bruce Daniels, Jr. Scholarship was established in 2014 in memory of Steven Bruce Daniels, Jr. This scholarship is for Danville, Pittsylvania or Caswell county graduates attending either NC State University or Virginia Tech and plans for studying in the field of agriculture (primary) or with a high school varsity athletics background (secondary). Brent Jones (North Carolina State University) and Macon Maxey (Chatham High School) each received $5,000.

The Danville Academic Boosters Club Scholarship is awarded to the top five scholastic students in the Danville Public School system. The following students received scholarships – Joshua Buckley (Galileo Magnet High School), Karen Delgado (Galileo Magnet High School), Makeda Warner (Galileo Magnet High School), Catherine Newell (George Washington High School) and Jake Gilstrap (George Washington High School).

The Danville Lions Foundation was established in 2016 to provide scholarships to Danville- Pittsylvania and Caswell County high school graduates who are pursuing a health related profession with a preference for those in a graduate level of study, especially those studying sight and speech/hearing professions. Two scholarships of $3,650 each were awarded to Tanner Cooke (Liberty University) and Mason Moorefield (Longwood University).

The Danville Regional Medical Center Auxiliary/Volunteers Scholarship was established in 2007 for Danville Regional Medical Center employees, volunteers and their immediate families, who are studying a medical field. Eight scholarships of $1,100 each were awarded to Hao Da (Johns Hopkins University), Hannah Dewberry (Campbell University), Tiara Hairston (George Washington High School), Chrisha Llana (Danville Community College), Elizabeth McBride (Averett University), Hunter Reese (Longwood University), Brianna Ryan (Lynchburg College), Dannon Wilson (University of Virginia).

The Roy L. and Mary G. Doss Scholarship was established in 2010 to benefit graduating seniors of Danville or Pittsylvania County. The following students received $5,500 each – Christene Buchanan (University of Virginia), Joshua Buckley (Galileo Magnet High School), Domitilo Gomez (University of Virginia), Danielle Jeffers (Virginia Tech), Jonathan McCain (UNC Chapel Hill), Dylan Mitchell (Liberty University), Morgan Mitchell (Galileo Magnet High School), Natalie Nicholson (University of Virginia), Fabian Shelton (George Washington High School), and Makeda Warner (Galileo Magnet High School).

The Susan L. Edwards Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Susan L. Edwards in 2012. The scholarship is awarded to students pursuing the field of radiologic technology. Frankie-Lynn Yates (DRMC School of Health Professions) received $950.

One student received the John R. and Betty B. Eggleston Scholarship, established in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Eggleston in 2002. The scholarship was presented to Kiara Bradner (Bartlett Yancey High School) in the amount of $800.

The First Responder-Hero Education Scholarship was established in 2013 to provide scholarships for Danville-Pittsylvania-Caswell County

High School graduates whose parents are armed force members or veterans, law enforcement officers, or fulltime or volunteer firefighters, with a preference for graduates whose parents were killed or wounded while performing their duties. Dylan Haley (Tunstall High School) received $1,500.

The Margaret Spruce Floyd Scholarship was established in memory of Mrs. Floyd and transferred to The Community Foundation in 2003. The
scholarship is awarded to female high school students from Pittsylvania County. Amber Huggins (James Madison University) received $2,000.

The GW Class of 1957 Scholarship was established in 2007 to benefit George Washington High School students. The Class of 1957 created the scholarship for their 50th High School Reunion. Nautyka Moore (George Washington High School) received $1,700.

The Gantsoudes Scholarship was established in 2008 to benefit George Washington High School students attending college in Virginia or North Carolina. Steven Black (Washington & Lee University) received $1,750.

The Roy G. and Joan F. Gignac Scholarship was created in 2000 to benefit area students who may attend the Illinois Institute of Technology or pursue technical disciplines. Scholarships were awarded to Landon Holley (Virginia Tech), Joseph Snead (Virginia Tech), Erica Watson (North Carolina State University), and Roman West (George Washington High School) each received $4,000.

The Diane Marie Gross Scholarship was established with The Community Foundation in 2013. The scholarship is for Danville graduates attending Washington and Lee University or the College of William and Mary. Katie Van Der Hyde (College of William and Mary) received $900.

The John B. Grubb Scholarship was established in 2007 in memory of Mr. Grubb to benefit Danville and Pittsylvania County Public School graduates. LeNae Wilson (Gretna High School) received $900.

The Gail and Walter Gunn Scholarship was established in 2015. The scholarship is for local African American students with a preference for those studying business or with an entrepreneurial interest. Shay Jeffers (Bartlett Yancey High School) received $700.

The Ray M. Harris Scholarship was created in memory of Mr. Harris and transferred to The Community Foundation in 2004. The scholarship gives primary consideration to Pittsylvania County High School graduates. Rebecca Andrews (Gretna High School) and Jalil Johnson (Gretna High School) each received $2,000.

The Stuart Harris Drama Scholarship recognizes outstanding drama students in the Danville Public Schools. Caroline Tucker (Queens University) received $1,100.

The Douglas Sager Hayes and Mildred “Mickey” Hayes Scholarship was established in 2013 to provide scholarships for Danville-Pittsylvania graduates studying art. Daquon Crews (Gretna High School), Megan Lester (Chatham High School), and Harper Scollo (Averett University) each received $1,600.

The Eliza Patterson Hines Memorial Scholarship was established in 2014 to support local graduates pursuing a career in teaching, preferably in grades 1-7. Katherine Johnson (Averett University) received $1,400.

The Hokie Bird Scholarship was established in 2013 to support Danville-Pittsylvania County graduates attending Virginia Tech. Michael Adkins (Virginia Tech) received $1,400.

The John L. Hurt, Jr. Scholarship supports students from Gretna High School, with a preference for students who have attended the John L. Hurt, Jr. Elementary School. Ethan Barnes (Virginia Tech) received $2,100.

The Robert and Bernice Milam Scholarship was transferred to the foundation in 2010 from Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church to benefit its active members. Abigail Davis (Danville Community College), Caroline Davis (Danville Community College), Tyler Martin (Danville Community College) each received $1,200. Lauren Johnson (North Carolina State University) and Noah Mayhew (Liberty University) each received $1,800.

Two scholarships totaling $5,400 were awarded from the Onnie H. & Bertie W. Milloway Scholarship to assist area students who attend Averett University. Scholarships were presented to current Averett students Phillip Ashby, and Bethany Hall.

The Patrick H. Musick Scholarship was established to provide funding for deserving Averett University students who have a tennis-playing background. Angelica Orlikowski (Averett University) was awarded $990.

The North Main Baptist Church Scholarship was established in 2016 for students who have been members of North Main Baptist Church for a minimum of one year. With a preference for those who are studying or plan to enter ministry-related fields, and have actively participated in North Main Baptist Church or college related ministries. Kyle Bailey (Tunstall High School) and Meagan Puckett (Chatham High School) each received $1,100.

The Arnold B. Porter & Elizabeth J. Porter Scholarship was established in 2006 for students who are members of Fairview United Methodist Church. Anna Brooks (Tunstall High School) and Peyton Chattin (Ferrum College) each received $1,600.

The Elizabeth Whitlow Ruth Price R.N. Whitlow Family Nursing Scholarship was established in 2016 to support graduates of Bartlett Yancey High School who are pursing nursing or health related professions at an associate, bachelors, or graduate degree level of study. Jessica Long (Averett University) was awarded $3,100.

The Irene L. Pritchett Scholarship was created years ago to benefit area African-American students. The Pritchett scholarship was transferred to The Community Foundation in 2001. Sierra Gray (George Washington High School), and Taliyah Thompson (Chatham High School) were each awarded $1,750.

The Alger Pugh Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Alger Pugh, GW High School football coach, after his death in 1984. The scholarship was then transferred to The Community Foundation and is given to deserving GW athletes, with a preference to GW Football players. Will Byrnes, Jake Gilstrap, and Isaac Whitfield (George Washington High School) each received $1,200.

Seven Gretna High School seniors were awarded $850 each from the Richard Ramsey Scholarship. The Scholarship was created in memory of Mr. Ramsey, a Gretna High School teacher, many years ago and transferred to The Community Foundation in 2010. This scholarship was created to benefit Gretna High School students. The recipients are Hunter Cline, Daquon Crews, Mitchell Doss, Jalil Johnson, Zachary McGill, Tyleka Robertson, and LeNae Wilson.

The Riddle-Francis Scholarship, which was created in 2005 by a former teacher to benefit Pittsylvania County students, with a preference for Tunstall and Dan River students. Haley Hall (North Carolina State University) received $800, John Oakes (Tunstall High School) received $800, and Samantha Shelton (Radford University) received $1,000.

The Rotary Club of Yanceyville Scholarship was established in 2013 by the Rotary Club of Yanceyville for graduates of Bartlett Yancey High School. James Blalock (North Carolina State University) received $1,200.

The Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship was created in 2001 to benefit area students. Veronica Berrios (Chatham High School), and Dylan Mitchell (Liberty University) each received $800.

The Spiros Skenderis Memorial Scholarship was created by the Danville Bar Association in memory of Judge Spiros Skenderis. Judge Skenderis served as a compassionate judge of the Danville Juvenile and Domestic Relations District for 19 years. A $3,150 scholarship was awarded to Trey Alvelo (Hargrave Military Academy).

The Eileen and Joseph Stendig Scholarship was created in 2005 to benefit area students. Karen Delgado (Galileo Magnet High School) was awarded $2,200, and MiKah Griffin (George Washington High School) was awarded $1,500.

The Louise P. Surles Scholarship supports area students who attend the University of Virginia. Benjamin Donahue (Tunstall High School) and Megan Wyatt (Tunstall High School) were each awarded $1,000.

The Florence P. Wagner and Jennie Lee Wagner Scholarship was established in 2008 to provide scholarships to Pittsylvania County high school graduates. Kayla Hill (Bridgewater College) was awarded $1,350.

The Andy Warren Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of GW High School assistant football coach and is given to deserving GW athletes. Will Byrnes, Jake Gilstrap, and Isaac Whitfield (George Washington High School) each were awarded $1,250.

The Woodlawn Academy Scholarship was established in 2014 to provide scholarships for former Woodlawn Academy students and immediate family of former students. Samuel Nicholson (Chatham High School) received $2,000 and Lauren Oakes (James Madison University) received $1,950.

DANVILLE, VA- A surprise grant of $3,000 was awarded to Halifax County-South Boston Library System by The Community Foundation of the Dan River at a May 22 luncheon for Halifax County supporters and potential donors at the Prizery. The grant is in honor of the Foundation’s 20th anniversary and will be used to enhance and expand the library’s 2017 Summer Reading Program to children and youth in Halifax County.

Halifax County has received more than $1.2 million in grants and scholarships from The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region since it began in 1996.  The complete listing of grants was shared. Information was also provided about the online grant cycle for Halifax County nonprofit organizations which will open in early August at www.cfdrr.org.

Halifax County donors have also established five endowment funds within The Community Foundation, including:

Carroll Thackston gave the first donation to begin the Fund for Halifax County, which benefits nonprofit organizations and projects in Halifax County. Six Halifax County citizens serve on the advisory Committee and review applications annually.

The grant is in honor of the Foundation’s 20th anniversary and will be used to expand and increase the impact of the children’s and teen summer reading program at Gunn Memorial Library for the community’s young patrons.

Caswell County has received more than $1.2 million in grants and scholarships from The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region since it began in 1996. The complete listing of grants was shared. DANVILLE, VA- A surprise grant of $3,000 was awarded to Pittsylvania County Library/PPL Foundation by The Community Foundation of the Dan River at an April 27 luncheon for Chatham area supporters, grant recipients, and potential donors at Reid Street Gallery. The grant is in honor of the Foundation’s 20th anniversary and will be used to enhance the 2017 Summer Reading Programs and expand the theme of “reading by design” with four new Maker Space or Creation Stations for each of the Pittsylvania County libraries.

Keokee and Autism Education Fund grant applications due February 20

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is now accepting applications for two education funds.

The Keokee Fund’s purpose is to support the education of academically gifted students. The grants will be used to provide support for organizations, schools, classrooms and students that are academically gifted in the surrounding area. Grants totaling up to $1,200 are available from the Keokee Fund. Download the Keokee Fund application here.

The Autism Education Fund’s purpose is to support local autism education- related programs or organizations benefiting individuals, families, educators and the Dan River Region community.  The grants will be used to provide support for educators, supplement costs of educational services and promote autism awareness in the surrounding area. The deadline for Autism and Keokee applications to be received is February 20, 2017.

The Community Foundation announces over $600,000 in new grants; more than $19.5 million given since formation

DANVILLE,VA- The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announced today a total of more than $600,000 in new grants to 47 non-profit community agencies at a reception at the Ringgold Volunteer Fire and Rescue. The Community Foundation was incorporated in 1996 and has already returned more than $21.5 million in community grants and scholarships.

This year’s grants contain $260,000 in funding made available by a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation. A complete listing of the grants awarded from the Danville Regional Foundation’s support is below.

The Community Impact Fund is made up of the following unrestricted funds: James Russell Anderson and Zora Carter Anderson Endowment Fund, Buck- Wayland Fund, Faith Home Endowment Fund, Clarence L. City of Danville-Fire Department ($10,000) To cover the cost of mental health workshops for emergency first responders and telecommunicators, travel for the instructors, handouts, and incidentals. (Community Impact Fund)

City of Danville-Parks and Recreation ($14,000) To purchase transportation service in the form of one-way trips from the Fresenius Medical Center (Danville Dialysis Clinic) for Danville City residents that are under the age of 60. (Community Impact Fund)

Claire Parker Foundation ($20,000) To support the Care Box Mission. Care boxes are stocked at each of their hospitals so families receiving a pediatric cancer diagnosis are tended to immediately. Funds will also be used to purchase iPads for children’s chemo packs that are provided in September (Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month). (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Area Choral Arts Society ($2,000) To pay expenses incurred for the presentation of Handel’s Messiah including, but not limited to, compensation for music director, accompanist, and string quartet, cost of venue donation, custodian, programs, and publicity. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Area Humane Society ($8,000) To purchase new resting beds and pallets for the dog runs in the shelter. (Community Impact Fund; Animal Welfare Fund)

Danville Community College Educational Foundation ($12,000) To purchase additional equipment for the Dental Hygiene program to support the largest student cohort ever in the college’s Dental Hygiene program. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Concert Association ($3,500) To offer a four-day Artist-in-Residence Program, conducted by the 5 member American Chamber Players, for area students in the public (and several private) schools in Danville and Pittsylvania County. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Family YMCA ($10,000) To purchase an InBody 570 body fat screening machine to help in accessing the members overall health. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville Pittsylvania Cancer ($30,000) To support the Patient-Aid services which are used to reimburse or assist local cancer patients in obtaining their cancer-related prescriptions. (Community Impact Fund)

Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity ($25,000) To support the construction of 343 Bell Drive, Danville, as part of the DCC Neighborhood revitalization project. (Community Impact Fund; Daniel Fund)

Danville Speech and Hearing ($20,000) To pay for needed speech therapy services due to the lack of insurance, high deductibles or co-pays, or lack of coverage for services by their insurance carrier. (Community Impact Fund)

Institute for Advanced Learning and Research ($13,444) To purchase 17 Surface Pro 4 Tablets that would be used on the new mobile STEM lab which will debut March 2017. The new tablets will allow students to use advanced coding, gaming, and design applications in support of developing their interest and learning in the STEM disciplines. Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc. ($4,000) To support the Virginia Outreach Education program which will offer an interactive educational experience to about 650 students from Danville City and Martinsville City public schools, bringing 17th and 18th century history to life in the classroom. Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center ($20,000) To purchase food for the local community for monthly distribution. The food purchases will support efforts to feed 250 families each month. (Community Impact Fund)

Pittsylvania County Department of Social Services ($22,000) To assist Pittsylvania County residents with emergency services, such as electricity, rent, or heat, during a CRISIS situation such as eviction, utility disconnection or no heat. (Community Impact Fund)

Providence Fire and Rescue ($8,000) To purchase new SCBA bottles that will replace obsolete/expired bottles from their equipment. (Community Impact Fund)

Quickstart Tennis of Central Virginia ($4,000) To purchase tennis equipment (racquets, balls, and portable nets) for schools and youth-centric organizations in Danville and Pittsylvania County. (Community Impact Fund)

Southern Area Agency on Aging ($25,000) To provide supplemental supportive assistance to older adults in Danville or Pittsylvania County. (Community Impact Fund)

SPCA of Pittsylvania County ($6,500) To help with the cost of vetting cats and dogs. The program will include preventive care vetting as well as spay and neuter of rescue animals. (Community Impact Fund; Irving H. and Louise Hambrick Scarce Animal Fund; Audrey Millner Fund)

United Way of Danville Pittsylvania County ($12,000) To support the Dan River Nonprofit Network with resources to improve area nonprofit effectiveness. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Danville Area ($10,400) To provide support and training for the youth in the program. The workshops will deal with personal safety, bullying, and gun safety. Boys & Girls Club of the Danville Area ($20,000) To support the full implementation of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America program Building Blocks locally. Funds will support program supplies such as tablets, consumables for program and hands-on projects, 3D printer, and engineering software and downloadable apps. Callands Volunteer Fire and Rescue ($10,000) To purchase two new thermal imaging cameras, as well as a piston intake valve, a 2 ½ inch fire hose nozzle, and a specialty piercing fire hose nozzle.

Caswell County Partnership for Children ($3,000) To offer more specialized instruction and to enhance instruction through the use of computers and software programs for tutors to utilize with students in self-directed online learning.

Casville Volunteer Fire Department ($5,000) To purchase a vehicle stabilization strut kit to stabilize vehicles in accidents where the vehicle was on a hill, embankment or on its side. Also, to purchase a plastic cribbing kit to assist in preventing vehicles from moving to assist in extraction.

Community Improvement Council ($1,745) To provide all 12 classrooms with a variety of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) materials.

Danville Historical Society ($15,500) To purchase museum-quality portable walls to create exhibition and display areas. (Daniel Fund)

Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History ($10,500) To present a four evening, multi-generational experience. Danville has the opportunity to host a Chautauqa tent event by sponsoring historical interpreters in first-person performances outside the Sutherlin Mansion.

Danville Pittsylvania Community Services ($20,000) To assist low-income, high-need individuals, ages of 16 and older with mental health, substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders, when they cannot afford medications crucial for maintaining stability and counteracting relapse.

Danville Symphony Orchestra ($6,000) To defray a portion (one quarter) of the direct costs of a few season concerts. (Daniel Fund)

Feeding America Southwest Virginia ($15,000) To combat the rising levels of food insecurity in Danville and Pittsylvania County by supporting the efforts of Feeding America Southwest Virginia’s Food Distribution Program. (Community Impact Fund)

First Tee of Danville (First Tee of the Triad) ($12,500) To fund 30 participants in the program for the 2017. It will also assist in providing 10 outreach training opportunities which will expand opportunities from the National School program into other elementary schools. The remaining funds will be used for training supplies.

Free Clinic of Danville ($25,000) To purchase ophthalmology and dental equipment that will allow more precise diagnosis and more effective treatment for eye and dental patients. Additionally, funds will support a portion of medical supply costs of providing ophthalmological and dental care to patients at the Free Clinic. (Daniel Fund)

God’s Storehouse ($24,300) To purchase food for customers and food for the Malcolm Huckabee Backpacks program, as well as money to repair a freezer door for the walk in freezer in the warehouse, and to replace the roll-up door on a small box truck. (Ahmed Children’s Fund; Daniel Fund)

Mount Hermon Volunteer Fire and Rescue ($10,000) To replace 3 sets of turnout gear (bunker gear) that no longer meet safety regulations according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Pelham Volunteer Fire Department ($10,000) To purchase equipment for ISO North Carolina Response Rating System. Some funds will be used to purchase an additional power supply for eDraulic rescue tool and to purchase helmets for junior firefighters.

The Community Foundation awards grants from The Fund for Halifax County

DANVILLE, VA–  The Fund for Halifax County has awarded its fifth round of grants, thanks to the work of the Halifax County Advisory Committee.  The committee consists of a few prominent members of Halifax County who wish to see the county grow and prosper.  After carefully reviewing the applications received, they chose the Town of Halifax – Farmers Market to receive $1,000.  The committee also chose to award the South Boston Medical Fund in the amount of $750 to the Halifax County Cancer Association.  Checks were presented on January 10 at the Town of Halifax office building.

The Community Foundation has awarded more than $14,000 to Halifax County organizations through the Fund for Halifax County, South Boston Medical Fund, Gideon Miller Cancer Fund and Benjamin M. Sugg Fund.

The Fund for Halifax County is a unique opportunity for citizens, organizations and businesses to help build an endowment to improve and enrich lives in Halifax County. The Community Foundation hopes to grow this unrestricted fund to enable more grants to be given in the future.  The next cycle of online grant applications for The Fund for Halifax County will be taken in August 2017.

Anyone can make donations to The Fund for Halifax County. Scholarship Applications Being Accepted Until February 27, 2017

(DANVILLE, VA) – The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is currently accepting applications for 46 different scholarships. Area students who are interested may apply online through the Foundation’s web site here. The deadline for all applications is February 27, 2017.

Students who are graduating seniors or former graduates from a high school in Danville or Pittsylvania County, Virginia or Caswell County, North Carolina may apply. Each scholarship may also have specific eligibility criteria that were defined by the donor. The online application system will determine your eligibility for each scholarship.

Last year the Foundation awarded 86 scholarships totaling more than $160,000 to area students. Since its formation in 1996, The Community Foundation has awarded 952 scholarships totaling more than $2.1 million.

The Community Foundation is a fully tax-exempt organization. Individuals, businesses or organizations may establish their own scholarship or endowment fund or may contribute any amount to existing funds. 20 Years of Impact Highlighted at Community Foundation Anniversary Luncheon

DANVILLE, VA –The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region highlighted  “20 Years of Impact” at its Anniversary Luncheon held Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research.

Founder Whitt Clement returned to share a few words of reflection on convening a group of regional leaders to begin the first community foundation serving the Danville area.

Special recognition’s were also given to Bob Wiles, the Foundation’s first director; founding Board members; as well as all past presidents of The Community Foundation.

Debra Dodson, Executive Director, stated, “What a great day for our region! Just imagine all the great work that would never have been done if these early visionaries had not stepped forward to start a community foundation 20 years ago. And just imagine how many lives will be touched year after year because we now have a strong and vibrant community foundation to offer personalized philanthropy to more than 3,000 donors from across the country!”

Some highlights of The Community Foundation’s impact since its formation in 1996 include: –

2004Name changed to The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region

2004—Agreed to serve as fiscal agent for the Veterans Memorial

2007— First met National Standards for Community Foundations accreditation

2016—Partnered with Pittsylvania County to receive donations on behalf of the new Animal Shelter

Since 1996—The Community Foundation has received $11.5 million in bequests and awarded $18.3 million in grants and $2.1 million in scholarships to 952 students!

2016 Highlights

Donors continued to add to the Foundation, bringing total assets to $29,366,999 as of June 30, 2015 – (which now have grown to $30,498,274 as of September 30!)

Other highlights for the year include:

  1. Receiving gifts of $1,910,361 from hundreds of donors.
  2. Awarding 80 student scholarships of more than $153,000.
  3. Awarding grants of $1,113,242 to 163
  4. Continuing to build the RiverBank Fund.
  5. Continuing to build the Fund for Halifax County.
  6. Continuing to sell more than 6,300 engraved bricks for the local Veterans Memorial.
  7. Entering into a new partnership with Pittsylvania County to receive donations on behalf of the new Animal Shelter.
  8. Beginning a Legacy Society to recognize individuals who designate a gift to The Community Foundation through a will, trust, retirement plan beneficiary or other planned gift.
