September 1, 2016 (Danville, VA) – The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is now accepting donations to support enhancements and possible expansions to the new Pittsylvania County Animal Shelter being constructed on Route 29 in Blairs.
Pittsylvania County Animal Shelter Fund
The Pittsylvania County Animal Shelter Fund was opened in 2008 by a private donor with The Community Foundation to benefit the Pittsylvania County Animal Shelter and encourage the construction of a new shelter. Several grants have been made to the County and the local SPCA chapter from the Fund.
In August, 2016, the Pittsylvania Board of Supervisors approved entering into a new agreement with The Community Foundation to accept new pass-through donations into the Pittsylvania County Animal Shelter Fund to support short and long-term enhancements and possible expansions to the new Shelter. The new shelter will provide significant improvements for the care of unclaimed dogs and cats as well as more visible and easier access for area citizens interested in adoption. The current Pittsylvania County Animal Shelter has had repeated violations due to inability to clean and dry the floors properly, which leads to diseases being spread between the animals.
The Board of Supervisors awarded the bid for the Pittsylvania County Animal Shelter to Blair Construction, with two alternates for a total construction cost of $3.24 million. The two alternates are acoustical panels, to cut down on noise, and a small addition to the north side of the building, which adds $94,000 to the base bid of $3.14 million.
Other alternatives that were cut from the bid but may be added if sufficient funds are raised through The Community Foundation include:

• Matching Veneer Siding
Donors may also be given special naming opportunities throughout the project.
Area donors have already created several other animal welfare funds with The Community Foundation, including the Veterinary Emergency Treatment Fund (V.E.T. Fund), Animal Welfare Fund and the Irving H. and Louise Hambrick Scarce Animal Welfare Fund. Anyone can donate to the any of these funds or start their own fund.

Appreciated Property – Gifts of stocks, bonds, mutual funds and real estate can result in dual tax benefits; the full value of the assets are usually deductible, with no capital gains tax paid on the appreciation.
Wills – A will bequest made to the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is deductible for federal estate tax purposes and may result in additional savings on state inheritance and estate taxes.
IRAs – Donors who are 70 ½ or more may gift funds directly from their IRA to The Community Foundation. Others can make the Foundation a beneficiary. In both cases, such gifts may eliminate significant income-tax liabilities for the estate.
Life Insurance – A life insurance gift, through a new or existing policy, offers a cost-effective way to make a significant gift to the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region.

September 1, 2016 (Danville, VA) – The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announces that it has developed an Agency Emergency Fund as part of its “20 Years of Impact” Celebration. The Fund will offer assistance on a one-time basis to Danville/Pittsylvania County/Caswell County/Halifax County nonprofit agencies which have prior grant experience with The Community Foundation. Agency Emergency Fund grants can be awarded for up to $25,000 no more than once in a five-year period.
Agency Emergency Fund Program Details
Emergency grant requests will only be considered by the Foundation if it is determined that:
- The request is time-sensitive in nature and could not have been predicted or reasonably planned for and a response for the emergency is needed in 45 days or less.
- The request is to support a short-term urgent funding need created by an unforeseen event that has or will significantly interrupt essential services.
Requests may be submitted at any time by a nonprofit 501(c)3 agency located in and serving Dan River Region citizens. There are no deadlines for Agency Emergency Fund grants, requests can be submitted at any time. A total of $25,000 will be available annually to area nonprofits.
To initiate a request, an agency representative should contact CFDRR and provide an initial explanation of the emergency situation. If the situation is considered to potentially meet the emergency grant criteria, the agency is invited to submit a formal proposal.

(DANVILLE, VA) – The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is currently accepting grant applications from 501(c) 3 charitable organizations serving Halifax County. Applications must be submitted online through the Foundation’s web site www.cfdrr.org. The deadline for all applications is September 30, 2016. One or two grants are typically awarded of $1,000 or less per cycle.
The Halifax County Advisory Committee will review the applications and recommend which organizations will be awarded later this year.
The Fund for Halifax County is a unique opportunity for citizens, organizations and businesses to help build an endowment to improve and enrich lives in Halifax County. Major General Carroll Thackston presented the Foundation with the first gift for The Fund for Halifax County in 2010. Thackston served on the Community Foundation Board of Directors for six years. Other Halifax County representatives have also served on the Foundation’s Board. Logan Young just retired after six years on the Foundation’s Board and Finance Committee and William Kelehar is currently serving on the Board.
Several other funds with The Community Foundation also benefit Halifax County.
• The South Boston Medical Fund was created with The Community Foundation in 2011 to support indigent care in Halifax County and general Halifax County charitable causes.
• Benjamin M. Sugg established a fund in 2000 to provide annual grants to the Clover Cemetery.
• The Gideon Miller Cancer Fund was endowed in 2014 and recently awarded first grants to organizations that assist cancer patients and their families in Danville, Pittsylvania County and Halifax County.
• The RiverBank Fund recently awarded two of its first grants to Halifax County Department of Tourism and the Roanoke River Basin Association for projects in Virginia and North Carolina earmarked for the protection and revitalization of the Dan River.

In 2003, the Chastain Home for Gentlewomen gave a gift of $1,030,000 to The Community Foundation to provide three years of grantmaking to charitable organizations assisting elderly women in Halifax County.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region has awarded 82 scholarships totaling more than $156,000 to area students. Presentations from 39 different scholarship funds within The Community Foundation were made at a scholarship reception held June 5, 2016 at The Community Center in Chatham. The Community Foundation has awarded 950 scholarships totaling more than $2 million since its beginning in 1996.
The Adkerson-Dodson Special Education Scholarship was established in 2012 in memory of Elsie Carolyn Adkerson and in memory of Robert Edward Adkerson and Elsie Herndon Adkerson. The scholarship supports deserving Danville/Pittsylvania residents who have a need for financial support and who are pursuing an undergraduate degree or licensure in special education. Courtney Meadows (Averett University) received $660.
The William E. Barr Scholarship was established in 2013 in memory of William E. Barr. The scholarship supports Danville – Pittsylvania County graduates attending Hampden-Sydney College. Nicholas Collins (Dan River High School) received $930.
The Bennett-Bushnell-Jones-Kaufmann Scholarship was established in 2008 to provide scholarships to second-year nursing students at Danville Community College. Emily Pleasant (Danville Community College) received $1,430.
The Deputy Frankie Lynn Betterton Scholarship was established in 2012 in memory of Deputy Sherriff Frankie Lynn Betterton who was shot and killed while making a traffic stop on May 17, 2002. The scholarship is for Danville/Pittsylvania residents who have a financial need and who are pursuing a law enforcement career. Adam Brown (Danville Community College) received $725.
The James W. Bryant, Sr. and James T. Collie Scholarship was established in 2005 by a retired school teacher. The scholarship is for Pittsylvania County Public Schools graduates, with a preference for those pursuing education or nursing. Two scholarships of $2,240 each were awarded to Keona Guy (Radford University) and Erika Dodson (James Madison University).
The Bernard C. Calvert Scholarship was established in 2004 by the Brosville Council #51 of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. The scholarship is restricted to Tunstall High School graduates, preferably students who attended either Brosville or Stony Mill Schools. Lauren Yoder (Campbell University) received $1,500.
The John Watson Daniel Scholarship was established by the JWD Retirement Club in 1997. A scholarship in the amount of $700 was presented to Bailey Gray (Bartlett Yancey High School).
The Steven Bruce Daniels, Jr. Scholarship was established in 2014 in memory of Steven Bruce Daniels, Jr. This scholarship is for Danville, Pittsylvania or Caswell county graduates attending either NC State University or Virginia Tech and plans for studying in the field of agriculture (primary) or with a high school varsity athletics background (secondary). Brent Jones (Bartlett Yancey High School) received $1,000.
The Danville Academic Boosters Club Scholarship is awarded to the top five scholastic students in the Danville Public School system. The following students received scholarships – Caleb Koch (Galileo Magnet High School), Wilber McLaughlin (Galileo Magnet High School), Alexandra Reddy (Galileo Magnet High School), Steven Black (GWHS) and Asher Caplan (GWHS).
The Danville Regional Medical Center Auxiliary/Volunteers Scholarship was established in 2007 for Danville Regional Medical Center employees, volunteers and their immediate families, who are studying a medical field. Ten scholarships of $1,400 each were awarded to Hao Da (GWHS), Hannah Dewberry (Campbell University), Claire Gray (Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy), Emily Hilton (Radford University), Elizabeth McBride (Averett University), Ashlee Pickrel (Lynchburg College), Humza Qazi (Chatham High School), Krystal Owusu (GWHS).
The Roy L. and Mary G. Doss Scholarship was established in 2010 to benefit graduating seniors of Danville or Pittsylvania County. The following students received $5,500 each – Christene Buchanan (Chatham High School), Melinda Jisel Espinoza (University of Virginia), Sierra Franklin (Liberty University), Domitilo Gomez (University of Virginia), Danielle Jeffers (Virginia Tech), Makenna Jones (Virginia Tech), Ram Leandro Madejas (University of Virginia), Jonathan McCain (UNC Chapel Hill), Natalie Nicholson (University of Virginia), and John Robinson III (Dartmouth College).
The Susan L. Edwards Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Susan L. Edwards in 2012. The scholarship is awarded to students pursuing the field of radiologic technology. Lauren Haymore (DRMC School of Health Professions) received $800.
One student received the John R. and Betty B. Eggleston Scholarship, established in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Eggleston in 2002. The scholarship was presented to Caleb Koch (Galileo Magnet High School) in the amount of $680.
The First Responder-Hero Education Scholarship was established in 2013 to provide scholarships for Danville-Pittsylvania-Caswell County High School graduates whose parents are armed force members or veterans, law enforcement officers, or fulltime or volunteer firefighters, with a preference for graduates whose parents were killed or wounded while performing their duties. Haley Shaffer (Salem College) received $1,000.
The Margaret Spruce Floyd Scholarship was established in memory of Mrs. Floyd and transferred to The Community Foundation in 2003. The scholarship is awarded to female high school students from Pittsylvania County. Emily Dodson (Pace University) received $1,680.
The Gantsoudes Scholarship was established in 2008 to benefit George Washington High School students attending college in Virginia or North Carolina. Steven Black (GWHS) received $1,440.
The Roy G. and Joan F. Gignac Scholarship was created in 2000 to benefit area students who may attend the Illinois Institute of Technology or pursue technical disciplines. Scholarships were awarded to Landon Holley (Virginia Tech), Hannah Ricketts (Virginia Tech), and Joseph Snead (Virginia Tech), Erica Watson (Tunstall High School). Each received $3,300.
The Diane Marie Gross Scholarship was established with The Community Foundation in 2013. The scholarship is for Danville graduates attending Washington and Lee University or the College of William and Mary. Katie Van Der Hyde (College of William and Mary) received $760.
The John B. Grubb Scholarship was established in 2007 in memory of Mr. Grubb to benefit Danville and Pittsylvania County Public School graduates. Wilbur McLaughlin (Galileo Magnet High School) received $680.
The Gail and Walter Gunn Scholarship was established in 2015. The scholarship is for local African American students with a preference for those studying business or with an entrepreneurial interest. Neriah Ray-Saunders (GWHS) received $600.
The GW Class of 1957 Scholarship was established in 2007 to benefit George Washington High School students. The Class of 1957 created the scholarship for their 50th High School Reunion. Jennifer Eibert (Mary Baldwin College) received $1,400.
The Ray M. Harris Scholarship was created in memory of Mr. Harris and transferred to The Community Foundation in 2004. The scholarship gives primary consideration to Pittsylvania County High School graduates. Paul Henderson (Johns Hopkins University) received $3,440.
The Stuart Harris Drama Scholarship recognizes outstanding drama students in the Danville Public Schools. Caroline Tucker (GWHS) received $975.
The Douglas Sager Hayes and Mildred “Mickey” Hayes Scholarship was established in 2013 to provide scholarships for Danville-Pittsylvania graduates studying art. Kelsey Edwards (Averett University) received $2,600.
The Eliza Patterson Hines Memorial Scholarship was established in 2014 to support local graduates pursuing a career in teaching, preferably in grades 1-7. Samantha Shelton (Radford University) received $1,230.
The Hokie Bird Scholarship was established in 2013 to support Danville-Pittsylvania County graduates attending Virginia Tech. Michael Adkins (Chatham High School) received $960.
The John L. Hurt, Jr. Scholarship supports students from Gretna High School, with a preference for students who have attended the John L. Hurt, Jr. Elementary School. Ethan Barnes (Virginia Tech) received $1,770.
The Robert and Bernice Milam Scholarship was transferred to the foundation in 2010 from Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church to benefit its active members. The following students each received $1,500 – Caroline Davis (Westover Christian Academy), Angela High (Danville Community College), Tyler Martin (Tunstall High School), Noah Mayhew (GWHS).
Three scholarships totaling $4,500 were awarded from the Onnie H. & Bertie W. Milloway Scholarship to assist area students who attend Averett University. Scholarships were presented to current Averett students Phillip Ashby, Nichelle Foisy, and Bethany Hall.
The Patrick H. Musick Scholarship was established to provide funding for deserving Averett University students who have a tennis-playing background. Angelica Orlikowski (Averett University) was awarded $800.
The Arnold B. Porter & Elizabeth J. Porter Scholarship was established in 2006 for students who are members of Fairview United Methodist Church. Kaitlyn Sage (Tunstall High School) and Morgan Tucker (James Madison University) each received $1,350.
The Irene L. Pritchett Scholarship was created years ago to benefit area African-American students. The Pritchett scholarship was transferred to The Community Foundation in 2001. Alysha Walker (Dan River High School) was awarded $3,000.
The Alger Pugh Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Alger Pugh, GW High School football coach, after his death in 1984. The scholarship was then transferred to The Community Foundation and is given to deserving GW athletes. Hao Da (GWHS) received $3,000.
Ten Gretna High School seniors were awarded $500 each from the Richard Ramsey Scholarship. The Scholarship was created in memory of Mr. Ramsey, a Gretna High School teacher, many years ago and transferred to The Community Foundation in 2010. This scholarship was created to benefit Gretna High School students. The recipients are Joshua Arthur, Leah Brooks, Shaundre Chambers, Vinita Cunningham, Erika Davis, Elisabeth Goad, Shana Martin, Heath Pierce, Cassidy Pruitt, and Lauren Rowland.
A scholarship in the amount of $2,200 was given from the Riddle-Francis Scholarship, which was created in 2005 by a former teacher to benefit Pittsylvania County students, with a preference for Tunstall and Dan River students. The scholarship was awarded to Haley Hall (Tunstall High School).
The Rotary Club of Yanceyville Scholarship was established in 2013 by the Rotary Club of Yanceyville for graduates of Bartlett Yancey High School. Jacob Crews (North Carolina State University) received $1,075.
The Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship was created in 2001 to benefit area students. Dylan Mitchell (Liberty University) received $1,375.
The Spiros Skenderis Memorial Scholarship was created by the Danville Bar Association in memory of Judge Spiros Skenderis. Judge Skenderis served as a compassionate judge of the Danville Juvenile and Domestic Relations District for 19 years. A $2,450 scholarship was awarded to Martin Gomez (Old Dominion University).
The Eileen and Joseph Stendig Scholarship was created in 2005 to benefit area students. Ishmale Davis (GWHS) was awarded $1,930.
The Louise P. Surles Scholarship supports area students who attend the University of Virginia. Hannah Barker (Tunstall High School) was awarded $2,600.
The Florence P. Wagner and Jennie Lee Wagner Scholarship was established in 2008 to provide scholarships to Pittsylvania County high school graduates. Kayla Hill (Tunstall High School) was awarded $1,100.
The Andy Warren Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of GW High School assistant football coach and is given to deserving GW athletes. William Browning (Lynchburg College) received $3,100.
The Woodlawn Academy Scholarship was established in 2014 to provide scholarships for former Woodlawn Academy students and immediate family of former students. Lauren Oakes (James Madison University) received $3,560.

On April 14th it was announced that The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region (CFDRR) will receive a second $250,000 gift from Duke Energy in support of the RiverBank Fund earmarked for the protection and revitalization of the Dan River.

The announcement was one of several gifts announced by Duke from their Water Resources Fund. The Rockingham County Community Foundation will also receive a second round of funding.
The RiverBank Fund is a special initiative to celebrate and revitalize the Dan and to offer the long-term care and appreciation the River deserves. Long-term support is still being sought from residents and businesses from Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania, Halifax, Mecklenburg counties (VA) and Stokes, Caswell, Rockingham counties (NC), as well as the City of Danville and beyond, who want the Dan River and its tributaries to thrive. The Community Foundation is currently managing eight grant awards totaling $237,500 from the RiverBank Fund. This new Duke Energy gift will allow for a second round of grant applications to open this summer.
Eligible grant programs will have to address at least one of the five focus areas:
- Responsibly address water quality for regional residents and companies.
- Encourage new development that ecologically features the River.
- Improve the cleanliness of the River and the Basin and help protect it from environmental threats.
- Increase access to the River for family-friendly sports, recreation and entertainment.
- Effectively promote the River to build regional pride and encourage tourism.

The Danville Lions Foundation presented two generous donations to The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region and Boys & Girls Clubs of Danville Area.
The Danville Lions Foundation Scholarship is being established with The Community Foundation. Scholarship applications will be accepted next year for Danville-Pittsylvania and Caswell County High School graduates who are pursuing a health-related profession, with a preference for those in a graduate level of study, especially those studying sight and speech/hearing professions.
The Boys & Girls Clubs donation will help to recover their gym flooring in order to prevent accidents and encourage more activity.
The Danville Lions Foundation is a recipient of the E. Stuart James Grant Trust administered by American National Bank.

The Fund for Halifax County has awarded its fourth round of grants, thanks to the work of the Halifax County Advisory Committee. The committee consists of a few prominent members of Halifax County who wish to see the county grow and prosper. After carefully reviewing the applications received, they chose Main Street United Methodist Church – Jane Jones Food Pantry to receive $1,150. The committee also chose to award the South Boston Medical Fund in the amount of $500 to the Halifax County Cancer Association. They presented the checks on January 20 at Halifax County Cancer Association Office.

The Community Foundation was incorporated in 1996 and has already returned more than $18 million in community grants and scholarships.
This year’s grants contain $250,000 in funding made available by a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation. A complete listing of the grants awarded from the Danville Regional Foundation’s support is below.
The following grants were approved by The Community Foundation’s Distribution Committee and Board of Directors and awarded from various funds as described below:
Altavista EMS ($11,000) To purchase and put into service a TempusPro patient monitor. It will be placed on an emergency response vehicle to diagnose and treat citizens in need of emergency medical care. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Alzheimer’s Association, CWVA ($12,000) To expand the current Dan River Arts Fusion and Memory Care program to provide an increased focus on education and support services to both family and professional caregivers. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Arc of Southside ($30,000) To subsidize the employment programs and to assist people with disabilities in obtaining a job in their chosen careers. (Faith Home Endowment Fund)
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area ($9,000) To provide training opportunities for the mentors, mentees and volunteers through workshops and to support field trips and a back to school picnic. (Faye Carter Fund; Pat & Cathy Daly Fund)
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Danville Area ($20,300) To purchase STEM kits, robotics kits and digital arts mobile labs to support the implementation of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Danville Area’s STEM program. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund; Pat & Cathy Daly Fund; Faye Carter Fund)
Cascade School Community Center ($1,990) To install a canopy on the front of the building to protect the building entrance from inclement weather. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Caswell County Family Services ($15,000) To provide victims, and their children, of domestic violence funds to purchase essentials for their homes. (School supplies, clothing, pots and pans, deposit for rent, etc.) (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Chapter 240, Air Force Association (AFA) ($3,200) To provide “Matching Grant” funding to Danville city and Pittsylvania County K-12 science teachers for science-based (S.T.E.M.) projects. (Gamewood Technology Fund)
City of Danville-Ballou Park Recreation ($10,000) To purchase transportation service from the City of Danville’s Department of Transportation-Mass Transit to and/or from the Fresenius Medical Center (Dialysis Clinic) for Danville City residents that are under the age of 60 that are unable to transport themselves. City of Danville Police Department ($12,800) To replace an aging child fingerprinting system and to revamp the program with new partnerships and offerings to the citizens of the Dan River Region. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Danville Area Choral Arts Society ($2,000) To support the Brahms’ Requiem concert through compensation of a music director and accompanist, venue donation, custodian, printed program, and publicity. (Elizabeth (Betty) W. Jefferson Fund; Harry Melton Hood Fund)
Danville Area Humane Society ($1,000) To purchase three computers to support an animal shelter software program. (Herbert Sater Fund)
Danville Concert Association ($3,500) To help offset the cost of bringing “River City Brass” to Danville for a performance in Averett’s Frith Fine Arts Center. (Clarence L. Giles Fund; Herbert Sater Fund)
Danville Family YMCA ($12,000) To scholarship children in the community for YMCA sports programs. (Faith Home Endowment Fund; Daniel Fund)

Gretna Little Theatre ($2,500) To support the Theatre by purchasing scripts for production, paying required royalties, and purchasing other materials used in staging and/or studying dramas, comedies, and musicals. (Faith Home Endowment Fund; Clarence L. Giles Fund)
Locust Hill United Methodist Church ($3,032) To purchase a 49 cubic foot double door freezer to store frozen items for their food distribution program. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Mount Hermon Volunteer Fire & Rescue ($11,000) To furnish and equip the Community Health and Safety Outreach Training Center in order to better educate the volunteer emergency personnel and the community at large. (Faith Home Endowment Fund)
Pelham Community Center, Inc. ($11,000) To purchase a new roof and gutters on the main building and new roofs on the dugouts at the ball field. (Faith Home Endowment Fund; John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund)
Piedmont Community College ($19,500) To purchase a new MakerBot Replicator Z18 3D printer, PLA Filament, Extruders, and other supplies and equipment needed for 3D printing and to send staff for training. (Faith Home Endowment Fund; Buck-Wayland Fund; D. Webster Marshall Fund)
Pittsylvania County Department of Social Services ($25,000) To assist Pittsylvania County Residents with emergency services, such as electric, rent, or heat, during a CRISIS situation. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
QuickStart Tennis of Central Virginia ($3,000) To purchase kid-sized tennis equipment and curriculum guides for public pre-K, elementary and middle schools in Danville, so they can incorporate tennis into the PE curriculum. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Salvation Army of Danville ($7,500) To fund facility updates through lighting and cleaning machines to eliminate unnecessary costs for maintaining the facility. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC ($9,150) To serve more children each day and allow the Caswell program to offer nutrition education classes to the kids and increase capacity at the program by acquiring cold storage equipment. (Faith Home Endowment Fund)
Southern Area Agency on Aging ($24,000) To provide emergency assistance to individuals 60 years of age and older who are in danger of being displaced from their home. (Clarence L. Giles Fund; Daniel Fund)
SPCA of Pittsylvania County ($6,000) To pay for the costs of spaying and neutering companion animals that are rescued in Pittsylvania County. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund; Animal Welfare Fund; Irving H. and Louise Hambrick Scarce Animal Fund)
Yanceyville Volunteer Fire and Rescue ($10,000) To purchase pagers and radios for fire fighter and first responder personnel. (Faith Home Endowment Fund)
YWCA of Central Virginia ($10,000) To support the YWCA Sexual Assault Response Program (SARP) in the Danville area. (Faith Home Endowment Fund)

Bachelors Hall Volunteer Fire Department ($11,000) To purchase a One Stryker Power-Load cot fastener system and a One Stryker Stair Chair to assist emergency responders while on call.
Brosville Community Volunteer Fire Department Inc. ($6,624) To purchase safety gear for the Fire and EMS members. To equip each of the responders with a Hi-Vis Jacket to provide more visibility and better warmth and comfort.
Climax Volunteer Fire Dept. ($5,000) To partially fund three sets of Personal Protective Equipment to include Structural Firefighter Coats, Structural Firefighter Pants and Structural Firefighter Boots.
Danville Cancer Association ($25,000) To assist the cancer patients in the Pittsylvania/Danville Health District (PDHD) with the cost of their cancer-related prescriptions.
Danville Church-Based Tutorial Program, Inc. ($25,000) To offer more specialized instruction and to enhance instruction through the use of computers and software programs for tutors to utilize with students in self-directed online learning.
Danville Life Saving & First Aid Crew, Inc. ($25,000) To purchase and install a power loading stretcher / retention device and the required Upgrade Kits to retrofit the existing stretchers to the new device.
Danville Speech & Hearing Center ($25,000) To help people who could otherwise not access the treatment their doctor prescribed to improve their health and/or ability to be contributing citizen(s) of the Dan River Region. (Daniel Fund)
Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services ($15,000) To create an opportunity to obtain dentures for high-need, low-income adults with Mental Illness, Substance Abuse, or Co-occurring diagnosis.
Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity ($25,000) To support the construction or rehabilitation of the next Habitat partner home as part of its DCC Neighborhood revitalization project. (Daniel Fund)
Free Clinic of Danville ($9,670) To replace the current patient data system with one that is more appropriate for patient care and operational requirements.
God’s Pit Crew Inc. ($22,000) To increase the quality, consistency and volume of the products that GPC is donating to their Product Partner Recipients. (Pat & Cathy Daly Fund)
Mount Cross Fire and Rescue ($5,630) To purchase portable lighting to make scenes at night safer and to purchase camera systems for the ambulances to have video proof should an incident occur on one of the ambulances.
Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center, Inc. ($20,000) To purchase food items needed by the NPCFC for distribution to those in need in the northern Pittsylvania county area. (Allen Fund)
Providence Fire & Rescue Inc. ($11,000) To replace worn out sets of gear with new NFPA compliant gear.
Reach Out and Read Carolinas ($2,750) To purchase age and developmentally appropriate books and to provide resources in literacy rich waiting areas and quality evaluation at Prospect Hill Community Health Center and Caswell Medical Center.
Ringgold Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department ($10,000) To purchase an up to date AED Defibrillator that will transmit vitals and heart rhythms to the hospital.
Tunstall Fire and Rescue ($11,000) To purchase a brand new FERNO IN X stretcher for one of the transports.

The Community Foundation’s next grant cycle will begin in June for projects to be funded in 2017.
The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is now accepting applications for two education funds.
The Keokee Fund’s purpose it to support the education of academically gifted students. The grants will be used to provide support for organizations, schools, classrooms and students that are academically gifted in the surrounding area. The Keokee Fund Application can be found here.
The Autism Education Fund’s purpose is to support autism education-related programs or organizations benefiting individuals, families, educators and the community. The grants will be used to provide support for educators, supplement costs of educational services and promote autism awareness in the surrounding area.
