Several types of charitable funds are offered by The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. Choose the one that matches your personal approach to giving and your charitable intent. The Foundation especially encourages the contributions of Unrestricted Funds. If you are interested in setting up a fund, or in contributing to an existing fund, please contact the CFDRR at the address and phone numbers listed below for help in planning a fund or with any questions about the funds. We will be happy to assist you.

Unrestricted Funds: Unrestricted funds are not specifically designated for us by a particular agency, case or area of interest. Our Board of Directors oversees the use of these funds, setting priorities for their use and determining how grants will be distributed to support the charitable needs of our community. Unrestricted funds give us the ability to respond to pressing and often changing needs in the community.

Field of Interest Funds: Field of interest funds support a broadly defined area such as the arts, the environment, health or a more narrow interest such as children with cancer. Donors can participate in the grantmaking process or utilize The Community Foundation’s experience to identify worthy grantees.

Designated funds: Distributions from a designated fund are earmarked for the specific agency(s) designated by the donor at the time the fund is created. However, the Foundation has the responsibility to reapply the funds to a similar purpose in the community if the designated agency ceases operation.

Donor-Advised Funds: Donor-advised funds are the most complex type of fund the Foundation administers. Donor-advised funds allow donors the right to recommendation charitable projects or organizations they want to support; however, the Foundation is charged with the final responsibility and authority over distributions.

Scholarship Funds: Scholarship Funds can be structured to benefit students at any education level or for a specific institution. A scholarship fund can also be established to honor a loved one. Outside advisory committees or The Community Foundation can assist in the selection of recipients. Either way, our staff will handle all the necessary administration to ensure that scholarships are distributed equitably.

Non-endowed Funds: Each of these types, however, can be created either as endowment, which allows no distribution of principal, or as non-endowment, in which principal can be invaded.
