DANVILLE

THEIR SERVICE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

A local group has just announced plans to build a Veterans Memorial to honor all veterans from our region. The Memorial will be constructed in Dan Daniel Memorial Park and will include a wall listing the names of all Danville/Pittsylvania County natives Killed in Action in every war.

A centerpiece in the Memorial will also be the Veterans Memorial Walkway, a circular brick walkway with the names of veterans who served and are serving in war or peace time engraved in a brick dedicated to their honor. Veterans honored in the Memorial Walkway can be from any location, war, or time period. This is an opportunity for family and friends to honor their brave heroes by purchasing a brick in their honor at only $70 each. All donations are tax deductible.

The project is being coordinated by the Veterans Memorial Committee, with financial donations received by The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region and construction oversight by The City of Danville. Construction is estimated to begin later this year. Some volunteers on the Veterans Memorial Committee include Newton Cassada, E. Stokes Daniels, Lester Gosney, Dave Newman, and H.I. "Happy" Slayton. Lawrence McFall and Danny Ricketts are serving as research consultants.

"We are honored to have this great opportunity to recognize the service of all our area veterans," said Davis Newman, chairman of the Veterans Memorial Committee. "We hope the community will support this effort to build a lasting memorial to their service."

Many businesses and individuals are donating their service to help build the memorial, including an area veteran who provided the design. Other volunteers are helping to distribute brick order forms which are also available online.

"We are looking for more individuals and groups who will step forward and help us remember those who have served," said Newman.

Purchase a brick for the current price of $125 by printing out an order form here and sending payment to The Community Foundation’s office at 530 Main Street, Danville, VA, 24543.

For more information purchasing a brick, please call The Community Foundation at 793-0884. General donations to help build the memorial are also needed. Presentations can also be arranged for civic or church groups.
