THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AWARDS NEARLY $160,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO AREA STUDENTS

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region has awarded nearly $160,000 in scholarships to 43 area students. Presentations were recently made from 15 different scholarship funds within The Community Foundation.

TheBernard C. Calvert Scholarship was established in 2004 by the Brosville Council #51 of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. The scholarship is restricted to Tunstall High School graduates, preferably students who attended either Brosville or Stony Mill Schools. Calvert Scholarships of $500 were awarded to Carrie L. Hylton to attend the University of South Carolina and Jennifer A. Jones to attend Danville Community College.

The Danville Academic Boosters Club Scholarship was awarded to the top five scholastic students in Danville Public Schools – Jake Whitmire, Douglas Lewis, Andrew Fischer, Solomon Pointer, and Ashley Davis.

One student received the John R. and Betty B. Eggleston Scholarship, established in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Eggleston in 2002. Matthew T. Brumfield, a Tunstall High School senior, received $725 to attend Danville Community College.

The Margaret Spruce Floyd Scholarship was established in memory of Mrs. Floyd and transferred to The Community Foundation in 2004. The scholarship is awarded to female high school students from Pittsylvania County. Three Margaret Spruce Floyd scholarships were awarded this year. Rebekah J. Faucette, a Chatham senior, received $1,000 to attend Hollins University. Martha P. Foster, also a Chatham senior, received $700 to attend Radford University. Faith Robertson, a Gretna senior, received $700 to attend the Central Virginia Community College.

Three area students received a scholarship from the Roy G. and Joan F. Gignac Scholarship to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Patrick A. Bray, a George Washington High School senior, received $39,000, while Andrew T. Rust, also a GW senior, received $21,500. They will be joined by Galileo School graduate Andrew J. Mey whose scholarship is for $20,800. As Gignac Scholars, all three students will be eligible to renew their scholarships annually through a Master’s Degree.

The Ray M. Harris Scholarship was created in memory of Mr. Harris and transferred to The Community Foundation in 2004. The scholarship gives primary consideration to Pittsylvania County high school graduates. Two Ray M. Harris scholarships of $750 were presented this year. Kelsey L. Cockram, a Tunstall senior, will attend Shenandoah University while Suzanne G. Gregory will attend the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

The Stuart Harris Drama Scholarship recognizes outstanding drama students in the Danville Public Schools. Matthew W. James at George Washington High School received $1,225 to continue his education at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Two Gretna High School students received a scholarship from the John L. Hurt, Jr. Scholarship. The John L. Hurt, Jr. Scholarship Fund supports students from Northern Pittsylvania County, with a preference for students who have attended the John L. Hurt, Jr. Elementary School. Crystal D. Jones and Audrey M. Thacker each received $1,175.


Four scholarships were awarded from the Onnie H & Bertie W. Milloway Scholarship. The Milloway Scholarship was established to assist area students who attend Averett University. Scholarships were presented to existing Averett students Mark Hall ($1,750), Teresa Roberts ($2,000), Stephanie Varner ($1,750) and Amy Alderson ($1,300).

Five area students received scholarships from the Irene L. Pritchett Scholarship, created years ago to benefit area black students. The Pritchett scholarship was transferred to The Community Foundation in 2001. Joshua O. Brown, a Gretna senior, received $1,000 to attend James Madison University. Aerial M. Ferebee, a Dan River senior, received $500 to attend Virginia Commonwealth University. Chatham senior Keith O. Logan received $1,000 to attend Longwood University, while his classmate Jasmine L. Miller received $500 to continue her education at the University of Virginia. George Washington senior Jillian L. Sturdivant received $500 to attend Radford University.

Six George Washington High School students each received scholarships of $650 from the Alger Pugh Memorial Scholarship. The Pugh Scholarship was created in memory of Alger Pugh, GW High School football coach, after his death in 1984. The scholarship was then transferred to The Community Foundation and is given to deserving GW athletes. The Pugh Scholarship winners and their college choices are: James T. Chaney (Norfolk State), Megan L. Jones (Lynchburg College), Lauren N. Lewis (Virginia Commonwealth University), Trevor G. Owen (Virginia Tech), Marlon W. Walton (Virginia Union) and Hillary K. Wood (University of North Carolina – Greensboro).

The Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship was created in 2001 to benefit area students. Douglas E. Lewis, a senior at George Washington High School, received a $1,175 scholarship to attend the University of Virginia.

Two scholarships of $1,575 each were presented from the Spiros Skenderis Memorial Scholarship, which was created by the Danville Bar Association in memory of Judge Spiros Skenderis. Judge Skenderis served as a compassionate judge of the Danville Juvenile and Domestic Relations District for 19 years. Mary E. Milam is graduating from Dan River High School and plans to attend Appalachian State. Brittany Shepherd-Walker is a George Washington senior and plans to attend Averett University.

Three scholarships of $1,000 were awarded from the Louise P. Surles Scholarship. The Surles Scholarship supports area students who attend the University of Virginia. The scholarship was presented to Derek W. Merricks, a Tunstall High School senior, and Andrew D. Fischer and Jake Q. Whitmire, George Washington High School seniors.

One George Washington High School student received a scholarship of $1,650 from the Andy Warren Memorial Scholarship. The Warren Scholarship was created in memory of GW High School assistant football coach. The scholarship was recently transferred to The Community Foundation and is given to deserving GW athletes. Trevor G. Owen will attend Virginia Tech.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, formerly known as DPC Community Foundation, is a public charity with total assets of $12 million. The Foundation serves a region from Martinsville-Henry County to South Boston/Halifax County, including the neighboring North Carolina counties.
