THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
ANNOUNCES $311,480 IN NEW GRANTS;
OVER $4 MILLION GIVEN SINCE FORMATION

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announced today a total
of $311,480 in new grants to 38 non-profit community agencies at a reception
at the Danville Senior Center. Also recognized were recipients of grants
awarded within the past six months, totaling almost $210,000. This is
the ninth year of operation for the Foundation, with total grants returned
to the community now over $4 million.
The following organizations’ grants were approved by the Distribution
Committee and the Board of Directors from various funds of The Community
Foundation:
- Alzheimer’s Association – Central & Western Virginia
– ($5,000) – to provide $500 to eligible families to enable
them to purchase "respite care" in the form of in-home help.

- American Red Cross-Piedmont Carolina Chapter – ($700) –
to purchase personal hygiene kits and a new generator for disaster relief
for Caswell County. (Barbara H. and Herbert W. Sater Fund)
- Angel Search & Rescue – ($950) – to train a certified
search dog for the Danville & Pittsylvania County area. (John C. Swanson,
Jr. Fund)
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area – ($600) – to
purchase guide books & videos on awareness/sexual abuse prevention
and managing anger so that each trainee will have their own book.(Faye
Carter Fund)
- Blairs Fire & Rescue – ($2,400) – to purchase a high
pressure air bag system and synthetic cribbing to enhance the capability
of saving lives when extricating victims. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Boys and Girls Club of Danville – ($1,940) to purchase technology
equipment (computers, video games, software) for the new Phil & Fran
Daly Teen Center. (Faye Carter Fund, P. Niles Daly, Jr. Fund, Philip &
Frances Daly Fund)
- Cascade Community Center, Inc. – ($2,500) – to help with
expenses to repair the roof on the community building. (Clarence Giles
Fund)
- Caswell County Parish, Inc. – ($1,200) – to send 12 youth
volunteers to the annual NC Teen Court Summit to learn new skills and
self-esteem enhancement. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Caswell County Partnership for Children – ($2,500) – to
assist licensed child care facilities with safely transporting children
in their care by purchasing child restraint seats & provide training
to child care facilities in Caswell County. (John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund)
- Caswell Family Medical Center– ($1,600) – to purchase equipment
& supplies to improve the effectiveness, safety, & efficiency
of radiology services. (John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund)
- Caswell Horticulture Club – ($400) – to provide a plant
identification program (Phase I) that would include large area plaques
& smaller I.D. plaques for trees and shrubs. (Claudia Vernon Smith
Fund)
- Chatham Volunteer Fire Department – ($4,500) – to purchase
3 sets of protective clothing for new personnel. (W. Earl & Elise
M.G. Allen Fund)
- City of Danville/Senior Citizens Center – ($5,000) – to
assist in providing the level of transportation services that Danville's
seniors deserve. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Crisis Line of Central Virginia/Danville-Pittsylvania County –
($5,000) – to purchase 3 new Dell computers to be networked. (Clarence
Giles Fund)
- Danville Association For Retarded Citizens – ($5,990) –
to install carpet for ADA compliance & needed replacement for wear
& stains. (Faith Home Fund)
- Danville Cancer Association, Inc. – ($2,000) – to assist
with the cost of adult briefs, chux, hospital gowns, & other medical
supplies not covered by insurance/hospice. (James A. and Anne V. Robertson
Fund, John C. Swanson Fund)
- Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History – ($2,500) –
to give the museum computer networking, to include replacing or upgrading
outdated computers, and a server. (Barbara H. and Herbert W. Sater Fund)
- Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity – ($5,000) to
help build a Habitat for Humanity house in the Chatham community for a
low-income family (W. Earl & Elise M.G. Allen Fund, John C. Swanson

- Danville Public Schools – ($5,000) – to develop and implement
a system-wide student wellness program. (Ahmed Children’s Fund,
Faye Carter Fund)
- Danville Speech and Hearing Center – ($2,000) – to offer
parent training workshops to give families the tools they need with their
language impaired preschooler. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Danville Science Center – ($6,000) – to support the Sixth
to Success Project. (Faye Carter Fund)
- Danville Community College Educational Foundation – ($2,000) –
to fund registration fees for DCC students to attend the Carroll F.S.
Hardy National Black Student Leadership Development Conference. (Faye
Carter Fund)
- Dry Fork Volunteer Fire Department – ($1,700) – to upgrade
present equipment, to safely mobilize injuries & minimize potential
for further injury, and to provide better training. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Free Clinic of Danville – ($5,000) – to cover the increased
costs of prescription medications for needy patients (The Daniel Fund,
Clarence Giles Fund)
- Friends of Gunn Memorial Library – ($1,000) – to purchase
technology needed for Dial-a-story for children, parents, & elderly.

- Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council – ($1,000) – to
support expansion of the Girl Scout Outreach Program to the Boys &
Girls Club of Foster Street site in Danville. (Faye Carter Fund)
- God’s Storehouse – ($160) – unrestricted gift from
donor-advised fund (Phillip and Frances Daly Fund).
- Hatcher Center, Inc. – ($7,500) – to provide scholarships
for a week at camp for individuals with disabilities. (Faith Home Fund)
- Hatcher Center, Inc. – ($187,440) – to continue safety incentives,
employee training, & future business development with local &
federal organizations to provide diversity of work opportunities to clientele.

- Institute for Advanced Learning & Research – ($5,000) –
to provide matching funds for AmeriCorps Southside to leverage state grant.

- Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center – ($2,000) – to
add meat products to the distribution boxes. (W. Earl & Elise M.G.
Allen Fund, Audrey Millner Fund)
- Piedmont Access to Health Services (PATHS) – ($5,000) –
to establish an "emergency fund" that will be supplemented by
additional resources in an effort to increase access to transitional &
acute medications for patients enrolled in Southside Virginia MEDAssist.

- Pittsylvania Caswell Youth Livestock Association – ($4,000) –
to subsidize scholarship funds, safety enhancements and show enhancements.

- Pittsylvania County Literacy Program – ($2,500) – to purchase
wholesale children's books & textbooks for pre-GED students. (W. Earl

- Providence Fire and Rescue, Inc. – ($1,500) – to purchase
shoring equipment (also know as a cribbing kit) to help remove accident
victims. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- The Salvation Army – ($4,000) – to purchase recreation equipment
for gym & software for community computer lab. (Faye Carter Fund)
- Southern Area Agency on Aging – ($5,000) – to provide financial
aid to older persons; thus relieving stress of caregivers. (The Daniel
Fund, John C. Swanson Fund)
- White Oak School – ($8,000) – to provide matching funds
up to $8,000 for playground fence and equipment. (Faith Home Fund)
- YWCA of Danville/Pittsylvania County – ($4,000) – to fund
the installation of a new computer in the offices upstairs & downstairs
in order to keep track of the membership & program information. (Gamewood
Technology Fund, Clarence Giles Fund)
- YWCA of Danville/Pittsylvania County – ($1,900) – to replace
appliances in the kitchen downstairs & upstairs with more modern equipment.

Applications for community grants will be accepted again later this summer.
Nonprofit organizations wishing to be added to the mailing list for applications
should contact the Foundation’s office. Grants are expected to be
made on an annual basis.
The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is a public charity
established in September 1996 by a steering committee of civic leaders
to meet a variety of social, educational, cultural and other charitable
needs. The Foundation serves a region from Martinsville/Henry County to
South Boston/Halifax County, including the neighboring North Carolina
counties.
