TO BE NEW ADDITION TO DANVILLE MUSEUM A beautiful rose garden is being created at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History thanks to a new fund at The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. The Alma Sigmund “Sigie” Perkinson Rose Fund was created by James Perkinson, in memory of his wife “Sigie,” a rosarian known state wide for her expertise and abiding interest in educating others in rose culture. The Perkinson Rose Fund’s purpose is to create and maintain a rose garden at the Danville Museum, where Sigie gave untold hours tending the gardens. A committee of Garden Club of Danville representatives and community members will oversee the project. This unique arrangement among the Danville Museum, The Community Foundation and the Garden Club of Danville has been carefully designed to ensure that the Perkinson Rose Garden is always maintained. The Perkinson Memorial Rose Garden will be located near the back of the Museum’s property, along Holbrook Avenue and Sutherlin Alley and will not alter the Museum’s front view. Measuring approximately 96’ long and 42’wide, the garden will include a mixture of vintage and modern climbing and bush roses, grass paths and mulch. A wrought iron arching trellis with a climbing rose will be at the entrance. The garden will be handicapped accessible. The garden has been designed by William Rieley and Associates, Landscape Architects, and architect for The Garden Club of Virginia. The design is in keeping with the long-term conceptual design for the Grounds of the Sutherlin Mansion given by the Garden Club of Virginia. The Alma Sigmund “Sigie” Perkinson Rose Fund
was created with a donation of $40,000 to create the rose garden and $30,000
for an endowment for perpetual care. Additional donations to assist with
the perpetual care are welcomed and can be sent to The Community Foundation
