THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
ANNOUNCES $304,275 IN NEW GRANTS;
OVER $5 MILLION GIVEN SINCE FORMATION

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announced today a total
of $304,275 in new grants to 41 non-profit community agencies at a reception
at the Ballou Recreation Center. Also recognized were recipients of grants
awarded within the past six months. This is the tenth year of operation
for the Foundation, with total grants returned to the community now over
$5 million.
The following organizations’ grants were approved by the Distribution
Committee and the Board of Directors from various funds of The Community
Foundation:
- Altavista Adult Day Care Center – ($5,000) –
to purchase a handicapped-accessible van to transport clients in Northern
Pittsylvania County. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Alzheimer’s Association – Central &
Western Virginia Chapter – ($5,000) – to provide respite grants
to caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.

- American Armored Foundation, Inc.– ($1,500) –
to provide landscaping cost for POW/MIA memorial. (John C. Swanson
Fund)
- Bachelors Hall Volunteer Fire Dept. – ($3,600)
– to purchase protective clothing and turnout gear. (Clarence
Giles Fund)
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area – ($500)
– to purchase two printers for the office. (Faye Carter
Fund)
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area – ($4,000)
– to conduct a volunteer marketing/recruitment campaign in Pittsylvania
County. (Faye Carter Fund)
- Boys and Girls Club of Danville – ($3,000) –
to support the Gang Prevention through Targeted Outreach Program. (Faye
Carter Fund, P. Niles Daly, Jr. Fund, Pat & Cathy Daly Fund, Philip
& Frances Daly Fund)
- Brosville Community Volunteer Fire Dept. – ($525)
– to fund an Airbag Lifting System & Control Package to extricate
trapped individuals. (John C. Swanson Fund)
- Callands Volunteer Fire & Rescue – ($1,000)
– to equip and prepare rescue unit to respond as a Rapid Intervention
Team. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Camp Grove Educational Opportunity Center – ($1,000)
– to offer assistance with G.E.D. preparation and establish health
and nutrition workshops. (John C. Swanson Fund)
- Caswell County Partnership for Children – ($2,500)
– to provide Kindermusik programs to children enrolled in licensed
child care programs and families. (John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund)
- Caswell Family Medical Center– ($2,000) –
to purchase a Spirovit SP-2 Spirometer to improve testing and treatment
for patients. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Chatham Volunteer Fire Department – ($2,100)
– to purchase a projector, screen, and a laptop computer for training
purposes. (W. Earl & Elise M.G. Allen Fund)
- Danville Area Choral Arts Society– ($2,290) –
to provide a music concert with a student choir to celebrate the Jamestown
anniversary. (Faye Carter Fund)
- Danville Cancer Association, Inc. – ($2,900)
– to help provide travel assistance to local cancer patients.

- Danville Life Saving & First Aid Crew, Inc. –
($2,000) – to supply EMS persons answering emergency calls with
radios. (John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund)
- Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History –
($1,175) – to provide for the conservation of important items in
the Museum’s collection. (James A. and Anne V. Robertson
Fund)
- Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services – ($4,000)
– to provide a support group for families of infants and toddlers
with special needs. (Faye Carter Fund)
- Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity –
($2,325) - to purchase building materials for home to be constructed at
710 Edmonds Street. (Ahmed Children’s Fund, Clarence Giles
Fund)
- Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity –
($800) - to purchase a computer server and maintenance contract for administrative
support. (Gamewood Technology Fund)
- Danville Public Schools/Galileo Magnet High School –
($4,900) – to assist students with the expense of the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Program. (Faye Carter Fund)
- Danville Reading Center – ($350) – to purchase
“The Super Doopers-Advanced” collection plus teacher’s
guide. (Faye Carter Fund)
- Danville Science Center – ($9,000) – to
help underwrite the traveling exhibit Speed. (Faye Carter Fund)
- Dry Fork Volunteer Fire Department – ($1,500)
– to purchase a training fire/rescue mannequin for instruction purposes.

- Free Clinic of Danville – ($5,000) – to
equip five exam rooms with wall mounted diagnostic sets. (John
C. Swanson, Jr. Fund)
- Friends of Gunn Memorial Library – ($3,925) –
to purchase Peek-A-Book, 2-year subscription, service agreement and installation
equipment. (Claudia Vernon Smith Fund, Clarence Giles Fund)
- God’s Storehouse – ($135) – unrestricted
gift from donor-advised fund. (Philip and Frances Daly Fund)
- Hatcher Center, Inc. – ($182,700) – to
provide Program Development for continued development, training and building/grounds
upgrades. (Faith Home Fund)
- Hope Harbor – ($3,400) – to replace existing
telephone and internal communication system. (Gamewood Technology
Fund, Harry Melton Hood Fund)
- Laurel Grove Volunteer Fire & Rescue – ($2,000)
– to enable responders to effect a rescue in a water environment.

- Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center, Inc. –
($2,000) – to add meat, beans, and other protein products to the
food boxes. (W. Earl & Elise M.G. Allen Fund, Audrey Millner
Fund)
- Oak Grove Residential Care – ($5,000) –
to purchase and install new flooring in resident rooms. (W. Earl
& Elise M.G. Allen Fund)
- Pelham Volunteer Fire Department – ($6,000) –
to purchase Airbag Rescue System. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Pittsylvania Caswell Youth Livestock Association –
($4,000) – to purchase “show ring” equipment.

- Pittsylvania County Literacy Program – ($2,075)
– to purchase a new computer and software to upgrade the data collection
system. (W. Earl & Elise M.G. Allen Fund)
- Pittsylvania County Schools – ($4,000) – to strengthen
the Chatham High School FIRST Robotics teams. (John C. Swanson,
Jr. Fund)
- Providence Fire and Rescue, Inc. – ($4,000) –
to purchase a Hurst cutting tool. (Clarence Giles Fund)
- Ringgold Volunteer Fire & Rescue – ($1,500)
– to provide turnout gear to suit firemen. (John C. Swanson,
Jr. Fund)
- Southern Area Agency on Aging – ($6,075) –
to provide financial aid for caregiver relief to older individuals. (The
Daniel Fund)
- Southside Soccer Club – ($1,500) – to provide
soccer equipment for the children and to maintain the fields.

- United Way – ($8,000) – to provide Born
Learning Welcome Parents’ kits to all new parents and priority families
with children under the age of 5. (Faye Carter Fund)

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is a public charity
established in September 1996 by a steering committee of civic leaders
to meet a variety of social, educational, cultural and other charitable
needs. The Foundation serves a region from Martinsville/Henry County to
South Boston/Halifax County, including the neighboring North Carolina
counties.
