Grant applications are currently being accepted for the Herman and Helen Melton Historical Fund. The fund was established in 2003 by Pittsylvania Historical Society representatives with The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. The Herman and Helen Melton Historical Fund supports historical research and preservation in the Pittsylvania County area.

The fund honors the Chatham couple who have contributed significantly to the research and documentation of county history. Born and raised in the Texas Panhandle, Herman came to Pittsylvania County as plant manager for Transco Gas Pipeline in 1959. He has published numerous books on Pittsylvania County history. Helen Melton also has published two fictional novels based on Pittsylvania County history. The Meltons now live in retirement in South Carolina.

Applicants may include 501(c)3 charitable organizations or individual researches. Individual researchers can be part of a formal educational research program or be independent researchers who agree to present a final summary of their research suitable for publication by the Pittsylvania County Historical Society. Of particular interest is someone to complete an update to the History of Pittsylvania County written by Maude Carter Clement in 1929. One or more grants of up to $1,000 are available this year.

Interested applicants should contact The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region for more information. Applications must be postmarked by April 10, 2008.

While the Historical Society has endowed the fund, organizations and individuals are encouraged to support the fund with additional donations. Gifts should be noted for the Melton Historical Fund and mailed to The Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1039, Danville, VA 24543.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is a public charity with total assets exceeding $18 million. Donors can establish their own endowment fund or can make a gift to any of the 64 funds within the Foundation.
