AWARDS $25,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO AREA STUDENTS

THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION has awarded over $25,000 in scholarships to 19 area students. Presentations were recently made from nine different scholarship funds within THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION .
One student received a $250 scholarship from the John Watson Daniel Scholarship Fund. Adam T. Poteat is a senior at Tunstall High School and plans to attend Danville Community College. The John Watson Daniel Scholarship Fund was established in memory of John W. Daniel by the JWD Retirement Group in 1997
Two scholarships of $1,000 each were presented from the Spiros Skenderis Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was created by the Danville Bar Association in memory of Judge Spiros Skenderis. Judge Skenderis served as a compassionate judge of the Danville Juvenile and Domestic Relations District for 19 years. Stephanie Pinkney is graduating from George Washington High School and plans to attend the University of Virginia. Alicia Delilah White will be a graduate of Chatham High School and plans to attend Emory & Henry.
Four scholarships were awarded from the Louise P. Surles Scholarship Fund. The Surles Scholarship supports area students who attend the University of Virginia. Scholarships of $1,000 each were presented to Scott Jones, Christopher Dawson, Stephanie Varner and Emily Burton. Jones is a senior at GW High School, Dawson and Varner are graduating from George Washington High School and Burton is a Tunstall High School senior.
Four scholarships were awarded from the Onnie H & Bertie W. Milloway Scholarship Fund. The Milloway Scholarship was established to assist area students who attend Averett University. Scholarships of $2,000 each were presented to Sara Baughman, Brandi Rowland, Stephanie Varner and Adam Moore. Baughman and Rowland are current Averett students, while Varner and Moore will be graduating from Chatham and Tunstall high schools.
A George Washington High School student received a $1,000 scholarship from the Alger Pugh Memorial Scholarship. The Pugh Scholarship was created in memory of Alger Pugh, GW High School football coach, after his death in 1984. The scholarship was recently transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION and is given to deserving GW athletes. Drew-Montez Clark plans to attend Virginia Tech.
One George Washington High School student received a scholarship from the Andy Warren Memorial Scholarship. The Warren Scholarship was created in memory of GW High School assistant football coach. The scholarship was recently transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION and is given to deserving GW athletes. Geoffrey Henderson will attend Hampden-Sydney College.
Two Gretna High School students received scholarships from the Roy G. and Joan F. Gignac Scholarship. The scholarship was created in 2000 to benefit area students who may attend the Illinois Institute of Technology or pursue technical disciplines. Alana Mistretta received $5,000 and Christopher Mason received $1,500. Both students plan to attend the University of Virginia.
The Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship was created in 2001 to benefit area students. Amanda Crews, a senior at Gretna High School, received a $1,000 scholarship to attend Ferrum College.
Three area students received scholarships from the Irene L. Pritchett Scholarship, created many years ago to benefit area black students. The Pritchett scholarship was transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION in 2001. Nerissa Davis, a Chatham senior, received $800 scholarship to attend Mary Baldwin College. Sheena Wilson, a Dan River senior, received $800 scholarship to attend Radford University. Thomas Williams, a GW senior, received $800 to attend Virginia Tech.
THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION is a public charity established in September 1996 by a steering committee of civic leaders. The Foundation strives to meet a wide variety of social, educational, cultural and other charitable needs in the Martinsville-Henry/County to South Boston/Halifax County, including the neighboring North Carolina counties.
THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION is a fully tax-exempt organization. Individuals or businesses may establish their own Fund or may contribute any amount to existing Funds. Debra L.
