THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION has awarded almost $40,000 in scholarships to 30 area students. Presentations were recently made from 13 different scholarship funds within THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION . One student received a $200 scholarship from the John Watson Daniel Scholarship Fund. Brandon W. Casey is a senior at Dan River High School and plans to attend Danville Community College. The John Watson Daniel Scholarship Fund was established in memory of John W. Daniel by the JWD Retirement Group in 1997. Two students received the first scholarships from the John R. and Betty B. Eggleston Scholarship Fund, established in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Eggleston in 2002. Tiffany D. McGhee is a George Washington senior and received $600 to attend Virginia Commonwealth University. Douglas W. Ware is a Chatham High senior and received $1,000 to attend Danville Community College. One area student received a scholarship from the Roy G. and Joan F. Gignac Scholarship. The scholarship was created in 2000 to benefit area students who may attend the Illinois Institute of Technology or pursue technical disciplines. Jennifer L. Gambrell received $12,000 to continue her education at Virginia Tech. One Gretna High School student received a scholarship from the John L. Hurt, Jr. Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was established in 2002 and is offered for the first time this year through THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION . The John L. Hurt, Jr. Scholarship Fund will provide college scholarships to students from Northern Pittsylvania County, with a preference for students who have attended the John L. Hurt, Jr. Elementary School. Katie R. Dews received $2,200 to attend Virginia Tech. Four scholarships were awarded from the Onnie H & Bertie W. Milloway Scholarship Fund. The Milloway Scholarship was established to assist area students who attend Averett University. Scholarships of $2,000 each were presented to existing Averett students Stephanie Varner and Adam Moore. Tunstall senior Mark A. Hall and Bartlett Yancey senior Teresa Roberts each received $1,800. Four area students received scholarships from the Irene L. Pritchett Scholarship, created many years ago to benefit area black students. The Pritchett scholarship was transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION in 2001. Whitney E. Clements, a Gretna senior, received $1,000 scholarship to attend Averett University. Sierra S. Coleman, a Dan River senior, received $400 to attend the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Traci DeShazor, a George Washington senior, received $1,000 scholarship to attend Virginia Tech. Talie N. Gillispie, a GW senior, received $1,000 to attend Howard University. Five George Washington High School students received $600 scholarships from the Alger Pugh Memorial Scholarship. The Pugh Scholarship was created in memory of Alger Pugh, GW High School football coach, after his death in 1984. The scholarship was then transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION and is given to deserving GW athletes. The recipients and their selected colleges are Kristin D. Farr - William and Mary, Nigel A. Holley - Virginia Tech, David O. Martin - Hargrave Military Academy, Scott F. Martin - University of Virginia, and Brooke D. Travis - University of Virginia. The Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship
was
created in 2001 to benefit area students. Lauren N. Rush, a senior at
George Washington High School, received a $1,200 scholarship to attend
the University of Virginia.
Two scholarships of $1,000 each were presented
from the Spiros Skenderis Memorial Scholarship Fund
, which was created
by the Danville Bar Association in memory of Judge Spiros Skenderis. Judge
Skenderis served as a compassionate judge of the Danville Juvenile and
Domestic Relations District for 19 years. Cynthia Y. Cook is graduating
from Gretna High School and plans to attend Danville Community College.
Dorrien M. Smith will be a graduate of George Washington High School and
plans to attend Temple University.
Two scholarships were awarded from the Louise
P. Surles Scholarship Fund.
The Surles Scholarship supports area students
who attend the University of Virginia. A $2,000 scholarship was presented
to Lauren Rush, while Brooke D. Travis received $1,500. Both students
are seniors at GW High School.
One George Washington High School student
received a scholarship of $500 from the Andy Warren Memorial Scholarship
.
The Warren Scholarship was created in memory of GW High School assistant
football coach. The scholarship was recently transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION and is given to deserving GW athletes. Scott F. Martin will
attend the University of Virginia.
Two scholarship funds were recently transferred
to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION by the Danville Academic Boosters Club. The
Academic Boosters Club Scholarship
was awarded to the top five scholastic
students at George Washington High School - Scott F. Martin, David Vinson,
Laura Pruitt, Mark Silvers, and Kristin Farr. The Stuart Harris Drama
Scholarship presented $500 to Krystle Kemp at George Washington. THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION is a public charity
established in September 1996 by a steering committee of civic leaders.
The Foundation strives to meet a wide variety of social, educational,
cultural and other charitable needs in the Martinsville-Henry/County to South Boston/Halifax County, including the neighboring North Carolina counties.
