BEN DAVENPORT ELECTED PRESIDENT
OF THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION

Ben J. Davenport, Jr. has been elected president
of THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION ,
a local charity serving Danville, Pittsylvania and Caswell Counties and
surrounding areas. Local attorney H. Victor Millner, Jr. will serve as vice
president. Vaden L. Wright, CPA, and Bonnie Cooper will assume roles as
treasurer and secretary of the organization.
Davenport is chairman of First Piedmont Corporation and Chatham Oil Company.
He currently serves on the Boards of Averett University, Hargrave Military
Academy, Virginia Tech Board of Visitors, Future of the Piedmont Foundation,
American National Bank, Danville Regional Medical Center and Intertape Polymer
Group.
Seven new directors joined the Foundation's Board of Directors to replace
the second class of retiring directors - Kirk Bidgood Echols, Constance
F. Fletcher, Nan C. Freed, Harry L. “Lee” Goodrich, Claude B. Owen, Jr.,
Kelvin Perry and Cathy Wright.
Echols is director of the Free Clinic of Danville. She serves on the Board
of Hospice Support Services and Wayles Harrison Memorial Fund.
Fletcher recently retired as director of Southern Virginia Mental Institute.
She is self-employed with AIMS as a clinical psychologist and Key Executive
Consultants as a management consultant. Fletcher serves on the Board of
S.A.V.E. and First Citizens Bank.
Freed is an active community supporter and currently serves on the DCC Educational
Foundation Board.
Goodrich is vice president, secretary and general counsel of Dan River Inc.
and is an officer of the Dan River Foundation.
Owen retired as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DIMON, Inc. and
currently serves as Trustee and treasurer of Averett University, and trustee
of the Institute of Advanced Learning and Research, Davidson College and
American National Bankshares. Inc. He is also a commissioner of the Virginia
Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission.
Perry is president of First State Bank and serves on the Boards of Boys
and Girls Club of Danville and the Danville Pittsylvania County United Way.
Wright has served as manager of public relations for Goodyear Tire and Rubber
Co and Miller Brewing Co. She is an adjunct faculty member for Averett University's
BBA program. She serves on the Piedmont Land Conservancy Board of Directors,
North Carolina Network of Grantmakers Steering Committee, United Way of
North Carolina Public Policy Committee, UNC-Greensboro Human Environmental
Science Foundation Board, and the Advisory Council for the Self-Help Center
of the Piedmont Triad, among others.

retired after six years of service - P. Niles Daly, Jr., Tita S. Escario,
Sylvesta L. Jennings, Michael A. Payne, L. Samuel Saunders, Eileen M. Stendig,
and E. Linwood Wright.
THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION is a public charity established
in September 1996 by a steering committee of civic leaders to meet a variety
of social, educational, cultural and other charitable needs in the Martinsville-Henry/County to South Boston/Halifax County, including the neighboring North Carolina counties.
