THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION is currently accepting applications for 13 different scholarships. Danville area high school students who are interested can contact their guidance offices for the appropriate forms or print them from the Foundation's web site at www.cfdrr.org. The John Watson Daniel Scholarship was established in memory of John W. Daniel by the JWD Retirement Group in 1997. Applications are accepted from area high school students who demonstrate a good academic record, a financial need, and a commitment to school and community activities. The Danville Academic Boosters Scholarship was transferred to the Foundation in 2003 by the Danville Academic Boosters Club. Top academic students from Danville Public Schools will receive scholarships. No applications are accepted. The John R. and Betty B. Eggleston Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Eggleston in 2002. The John R. and Betty B. Eggleston Scholarship Fund will award scholarships to one or more graduating seniors from the Danville area. The Roy G. and Joan F. Gignac Scholarship was established in 2000 through THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION . It supports qualified area high school graduates, with preference shown to students attending the Illinois Institute of Technology or pursuing technical disciplines. NEW THIS YEAR - Up to $100,000 is available for local students attending Illinois Institute of Technology, with scholarships available for renewal through graduate school!! The Stuart Harris Drama Scholarship was transferred to the Foundation in 2003 by the Danville Academic Boosters Club. The scholarship will recognize the outstanding drama student from the Danville Public Schools. Students do not directly apply for this scholarship, but guidance counselors recommend qualified students. The John L. Hurt, Jr. Scholarship Fund was established in 2002. The John L. Hurt, Jr. Scholarship Fund will provide college scholarships to students from Northern Pittsylvania County, with a preference for students who have attended the John L. Hurt, Jr. Elementary School. The Onnie H. & Bertie W. Milloway Scholarship was transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION in 1998. The scholarship is designed to assist area students who attend Averett University. Interested students should contact the Averett University Financial Aid office. The Irene Pritchett Scholarship was transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION in 2001. It supports deserving black graduates of Danville and Pittsylvania County and the Children's Home of Virginia Baptist, Inc. Students do not directly apply for this scholarship, but guidance counselors recommend qualified students. The Alger Pugh and Andy Warren Scholarships were transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION in 2000. The scholarships were established in memory of these George Washington High School football coaches and are given to deserving GW football players or athletes. Interested students should contact the GW guidance office for applications. The Percy and Velna Scearce Scholarship was established in 2000 and supports any level of post high school educational goals, to include attendance at trade schools, colleges, universities, and postgraduate schools. The Spiros Skenderis Memorial Scholarship was created by the Danville Bar Association in memory of Judge Spiros Skenderis. Judge Skenderis served as a compassionate judge of the Danville Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court for 19 years. Students do not directly apply for this scholarship, but guidance counselors recommend students who have the most potential for success. The Louise P. Surles Scholarship was transferred to THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION in 1998 and supports area students who attend the University of Virginia. Students do not directly apply for this scholarship, but guidance counselors recommend students who have the most potential for success. THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION is a public charity established in September 1996 by a steering committee of civic leaders. The Foundation strives to meet a wide variety of social, educational, cultural and other charitable needs in the Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County, N.C., area, as well as Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina. THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE DAN RIVER REGION is a fully tax-exempt organization. Individuals or businesses may establish their own Fund or may contribute any amount to existing Funds.
