DPC Community Foundation, a
public charity serving Danville, Pittsylvania County, and Caswell County
since 1996, has a new name, logo and a regional focus for its philanthropic
future.
Effective July 1, the organization, with more than $12 million in assets,
will be named The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. A new
logo, designed to reflect the regional nature of the Foundation’s
future, was unveiled recently along with a redesigned web site. The Dan
River connects the expanded region the Community Foundation will serve,
from Henry County to Halifax County and from Pittsylvania County to Caswell
County, N.C.
Community Foundation President Ben Davenport said, “We are excited
to announce this name change and everything it represents. Truly our region
is discovering that we must invest in ourselves in order to build a brighter
future.”
The need for the name change arose from the community itself. As the Foundation
turned 7 years old last fall, a major gift was headed its way from a source
downstream of Danville. The Chastain Home for Gentlewomen in Halifax gave
the Foundation $1,030,000 just before Christmas. This gift caused the
organization’s Board of Directors, which has voted unanimously to
approve the changes, to see the Community Foundation’s future flows
from and to more than just Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County,
N.C. (DPC). The Chastain Home Fund, for example, just announced $480,000
in grants to benefit organizations in the Halifax County area. The Foundation
also has been approached by donors in the Martinsville/Henry County area.
The new logo, designed by Kim Demont of Vaden & Associates, symbolizes
the Community Foundation by depicting the river that runs through the
region and connects its communities, its donors and beneficiaries. In
the future, the Foundation will focus on Danville, Pittsylvania County,
Caswell County, as well as Halifax County, and Martinsville and Henry
County. However, the region encompasses the potential for philanthropy
in other communities as well. The Dan River actually begins in Patrick
County and dips into North Carolina as it flows through Stokes and Rockingham
counties. Along the way, the Dan receives waters from the Mayo and Smith
rivers, which flow from Patrick and Henry counties. As it revisits Virginia,
the Dan passes through part of Pittsylvania County and bisects Danville
before it turns south again, dipping back into North Carolina and brushing
Caswell County, and then flows north into Halifax County. Along its homestretch
in Halifax, the Dan joins the Banister River, which flows from Pittsylvania
and through Halifax, and finally the Staunton (Roanoke) River in forming
the John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake) and Lake Gaston.
Along with the new name and logo, a redesigned web site was unveiled.
The Community Foundation’s new web address is www.cfdrr.org, and
its new e-mail address is communityfoundation@gamewood.net.
The Community Foundation is a public charity established in September
1996 by a steering committee of civic leaders to meet a variety of social,
educational, cultural and other charitable needs in the area. Community
foundations are the fastest growing non-profit organizations in the nation.
There are more than 600 community foundations in the United States. A
community foundation offers different types of philanthropic giving in
order to benefit the community. Memorials, endowments, and scholarships
