The Bernard C. Calvert Scholarship was given by the Brosville Council #51 of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. The Junior Order was founded in 1853 in Pennsylvania. The order is a fraternal and patriotic organization whose purpose is to support free public education, promote Americanism and encourage worship in the Christian faith. The Virginia Council was chartered in 1884 and the Brosville Council #51 was chartered in 1909. Mr. Bernard C. Calvert, at age 93, is one of the oldest members of the Virginia Council of the Junior Order. He has served in every capacity in both the local and state councils. In 1953, he was elected to the office of State Counciler, the highest office in the state order. The scholarship will support needy and deserving students from Tunstall High School, with a preference for students who attended either Brosville or Stony Mill Schools. More information will be available for interested students by February, 2005. The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is a public charity with total assets exceeding $12 million. Over 650 community foundations exist in the United States, with 23 in Virginia.
