THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
ANNOUNCES $339,000 IN NEW GRANTS;
OVER $2.8 MILLION GIVEN SINCE FORMATION

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announced today a total of $339,880 in new grants to nearly 35 non-profit community agencies at a reception at the Danville Senior Center. Also recognized were recipients of grants awarded within the past six months, totaling almost $10,000. This is the eighth year of operation for the Foundation, with total grants returned to the community now over $2.8 million.

The following organizations’ grants were approved by the Distribution Committee and the Board of Directors from various funds of The Community Foundation:

Administrative/Unrestricted Fund
- Institute for Advanced Learning & Research ($5,000) – to support a non-profit capacity building seminar.

W. Earl & Elise M. G. Allen Fundto benefit the people of Chatham and Pittsylvania County
- Chatham First – ($4,500) – to purchase and install weather-resistant, permanent “Chatham” sign and supports.
- Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center – ($2,000) - to add meat products to distribution boxes.
- Oak Grove Residential Care – ($6,000) – to scrape, repair and repaint the metal roof.
- Pittsylvania County Literacy Program – ($1,000) – to purchase instructional materials for pre-GED adult students and children’s books.

Faye Carter Fund to benefit youth in the Danville area
- Boys and Girls Club of Danville – ($10,000) - to provide matching funds for the Gang Prevention through Targeted Outreach Program.
- Danville Church-Based Tutorial Program – ($4,500) – to provide needed supplies for students at tutorial sites.
- Danville Church-Based Tutorial Program – ($5,100) – to purchase computers for church sites.

P. Niles Daly, Jr. Fund to help meet a variety of social, educational, health and other area needs
- Boys and Girls Club of Danville – ($400) - to purchase technology equipment and supplies.

Philip and Frances Daly Fund to help meet a variety of social, educational, health and other area needs
- Boys and Girls Club of Danville – ($175) - to purchase technology equipment and supplies.
- God’s Storehouse – ($175) – to replace computers used by staff and volunteers.

Faith Home Fund to meet current, emerging and evolving community needs
- Free Clinic of Danville – ($4,400) - to purchase a printer and supplies to develop an ID card system for patients.
- God’s Storehouse – ($4,825) – to replace computers used by staff and volunteers.
- Hatcher Center, Inc. – ($187,440) – to make the workshop safer and compliant with state and Federal regulations.
- Hatcher Center, Inc. – ($8,800) – to purchase a camera system to eliminate conflict or liability.
- M.T. Sorrell, Inc. – ($6,790) – to provide storage space for residents’ clothing.
- White Oak School, Inc. – ($23,750) - to purchase a new van.

Gamewood Technology Fund for programs utilizing information technologies for the improvement of the lives of children, the elderly, and persons with illness and disabilities
- City of Danville/Stonewall Therapeutic Recreation Center – ($1,900) - to purchase computer equipment and software to assist disabled people.
- Free Clinic of Danville – ($600) - to purchase a printer and supplies to develop an ID card system for patients.

Clarence Giles Fundto help meet a variety of social, educational, health and other area needs
- Boys & Girls Club – ($1,925) - to purchase technology equipment and supplies.
- Brosville Community Volunteer Fire Department – ($2,500) – to purchase emergency medical training equipment.
- Callands Volunteer Fire and Rescue – ($2,500) – to assist with the purchase of seven new fire fighter air packs.
- Caswell County Local Unit/Autism Society of NC – ($200) – to erect a greenhouse at Dillard School.
- Caswell County Partnership for Children – ($4,000) – to provide transportation for after-school field trips and for one reading/writing enrichment activity.
- Caswell Family Violence Prevention Program – ($5,300) – to purchase privacy and chain link fences for the safe shelter.
- Caswell Friends of Gunn Memorial Library – ($150) to provide materials and books for creative writing courses for teens.
- City of Danville/Senior Citizens Center – ($1,650) – to purchase fitness equipment for the Senior Citizens Center.
- Crisis Line of Central Virginia – ($3,700) – to recruit, train and support volunteers and support merged boards' development.
- Danville Area Association for the Arts & Humanities – ($2,400) – to purchase equipment needed for performances at GW auditorium.
- Danville Speech and Hearing Center– ($2,150) - to buy an OtoAccoustic echo test instrument.
- Laurel Grove Volunteer Fire Department – ($4,000) - to purchase safety equipment for fire fighters.
- Mount Cross Volunteer Fire & Rescue – ($2,500) - to purchase SCBA cylinders and hand held radios.
- Piedmont Access to Health Services (PATHS) – ($4,000) - to purchase supplies to be used in the disease management program.

Harry Melton Hood Fundto help meet a variety of social, educational, health and other area needs
- YWCA – ($1,900) – to install safety walking floor mats in locker rooms.

James A. and Anne V. Robertson Fund to help meet a variety of social, educational, health and other area needs
- Mental Health Association of Danville-Pittsylvania – ($1,200) - to purchase child abuse educational materials.

Barbara H. and Herbert W. Sater Fund to help meet a variety of social, educational, health and other area needs
- Caswell County Local Unit/Autism Society of NC – ($1,300) – to erect a greenhouse at Dillard School.
- Danville Reading Center – ($2,000) - to purchase a refurbished copier for reproducing student instruction sheets.

Claudia Vernon Smith Fund to help support the education of youth in Caswell County
- Caswell Friends of Gunn Memorial Library – ($300) to provide materials and books for creative writing courses for teens.

John C. Swanson, Jr. Fundto help meet a variety of social, educational, health and other area needs
- Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity – ($5,000) – to help purchase construction materials for the YOUTH CAN house.
- Danville Regional Health Foundation – ($2,850) – to provide lodging assistance for families who do not have resources to pay the nominal fee.
- Danville Symphony Orchestra – ($4,000) – to provide paid musicians to fill in necessary gaps.
- DOVES, Inc. – ($2,750) - to purchase three computers and printers for offices
- Mental Health Association of Danville-Pittsylvania – ($250) - to purchase child abuse educational materials.
- YWCA of Danville/Pittsylvania County – ($4,000) – to install safer pool lights.

Applications for community grants will be accepted again later this summer. Nonprofit organizations wishing to be added to the mailing list for applications should contact the Foundation’s office. Grants are expected to be made on an annual basis.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is a public charity established in September 1996 by a steering committee of civic leaders to meet a variety of social, educational, cultural and other charitable needs. The Foundation serves a region from Martinsville/Henry County to South Boston/Halifax County, including the neighboring North Carolina counties.
