The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announced today a total of $607,000 in new grants to 42 non-profit community agencies at a reception at the Pepsi Building. The Community Foundation was incorporated in 1996 and has already returned more than $16 million in community grants and scholarships.
2014 Grant Recipients
This year’s grants contain $250,000 in funding made available by a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation. A complete listing of the grants awarded from the Danville Regional Foundation’s support is below.
The following grants were approved by The Community Foundation’s Distribution Committee and Board of Directors and awarded from various funds as described below:
Alzheimers Association, Central & Western Virginia – ($9,500) To provide persons with a diagnosis of Alzheimers disease or related dementia, living in the Dan River Region, the opportunity to engage in quality of life art and cultural experiences.
Animal Welfare League of Pittsylvania County – ($3,000) To provide vaccinations for the animals rescued in Pittsylvania County.
ARC of Southside – Hatcher Center – ($90,000) To provide services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Boys & Girls Club of the Danville Area – ($20,000) To improve the safety of the gym, purchase equipment, and provide transportation for the gym and healthy lifestyles programming.
Caswell County EMS – ($13,200) To purchase an off-road all-terrain emergency response rescue vehicle.
Chapter 240, Air Force Association – ($1,500) To provide “matching grant” funding for competitive and qualified grants submitted by STEM teachers affiliated with Danville City and Pittsylvania County schools at the K12 level.
City of Danville – Danville Fire Department – ($20,000) To safely and efficiently transport people, both emergency responders and the general public, by purchasing a multipurpose bus.
City of Danville – Department of Parks & Recreation Special Recreation Division – Ballou Recreation Center – Senior Transportation – ($13,000) To purchase service to transport Danville City residents that need life-saving dialysis treatment who are under the age of 60.
City of Danville Division of Social Services – Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program – ($25,000) To provide critical and emergency financial assistance via direct payment to the City of Danville Utilities Department.
Danville Area Choral Arts Society – ($1,500) To present a quality choral concert to the general public, Hayden’s “Missa Sancti Nicolai.”
Danville Area Humane Society, Inc. – ($6,500) To repair and upgrade the oldest parts of the shelter.
Danville Cancer Association, Inc. – ($25,000) To assist area cancer patients with the cost of cancer-related treatments, prescriptions and other special needs.
Danville Concert Association – ($3,500) To bring SOLAS, “the quintessential Irish-American band recording and touring in the U.S. today,” to Danville.
Danville Family YMCA – ($6,800) To purchase a commercial blood pressure machine for the YMCA members to use to monitor their blood pressure and heart rates to prevent any accidents or emergencies.
Danville Science Center – ($15,000) To help bring the traveling exhibits, “From Here to There” and “Attack of the Bloodsuckers,” to the Danville Science Center.
Danville Speech & Hearing Center – ($25,000) To provide speech/language pathology services and supplies to uninsured, underinsured, and no/low income citizens who present a communication disorder.
Family Services of Caswell County – ($16,000) To purchase a vehicle to transport clients.
Feeding America Southwest Virginia – ($10,000) To help feed people in Danville and Pittsylvania County who are struggling to get enough to eat.
Institute for Advanced Learning & Research Foundation – ($4,500) To fund three “workplace experience” field trips to high-end industry work sites.
Oak Grove Residential Care, Inc. – ($6,000) To repair subfloor in kitchen and install new flooring, paint, and lighting.
Pittsylvania County Literacy Program – ($1,000) To continue “At-Risk Children’s Reading Project.”
Smart Beginnings Danville Pittsylvania – ($13,000) To make the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program available in Danville and Pittsylvania County and expand enrollment during 2014.
Southern Area Agency on Aging – ($25,000) To provide emergency type assistance to older persons who need financial aid or services to avoid a possible crisis situation.
The following grants were awarded as a result of The Community Foundation’s grantmaking partnership with the Danville Regional Foundation.
ATT Search & Rescue Dogs of Virginia, Inc. – ($1,000) To purchase a radio frequency license to be certified.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area – ($18,000) Training for mentors and events such as a back to school party and out of town trips.
Callands Volunteer Fire & Rescue – ($10,500) To update fire equipment to ensure a safer and quicker response during fire suppression.
Caswell Family Medical Center – ($9,000) To provide free and low-cost immunization services for children, adults, and elderly patients in Caswell County by purchasing specialized refrigeration equipment.
Caswell Parish – ($18,000) To continue operations of the Two Hearts 2 Go Mobile Emergency distribution of food to needy residents in rural areas of Caswell County.
Climax Volunteer Fire Department – ($8,500) To purchase a thermal imaging camera for our department as an additional tool to save lives.
Danville Church-Based Tutorial – ($20,000) To provide summer STEM Enrichment camps at DCC where students can build their own computers.
Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services – ($15,000) To purchase a 14-passenger activity bus to transport at-risk youth and their families for Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services’ Prevention programs.
Danville Symphony Orchestra – ($8,300) To present a series of four free, live orchestral music concerts for the general public of Danville, Southside Virginia and Piedmont NC.
Free Clinic of Danville – ($25,000) To provide medical care, education and supplies to diabetic patients at the Free Clinic.
God’s Storehouse – ($24,000) To purchase food to distribute to their clientele and a children’s backpack feeding program.
House of Hope – ($11,400) To support a case management initiative to follow up with homeless individuals and families to identify the reasons for the situation and what steps and directions need to be taken to improve their homeless condition.
Mt. Cross Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department – ($15,000) To purchase a new 30″ powered zoom stretcher.
Pelham Volunteer Fire Department – ($6,120) To replace an aging AED and purchase safety equipment.
Pittsylvania County 4-H – ($5,000) To develop skills of county youth in various aspects through day camps and an overnight camp.
Providence Fire & Rescue INC – ($7,500) To purchase new personal protective equipment for members.
Ringgold Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, Inc. – ($15,000) To purchase a Ladder Truck for the southern end of Pittsylvania County.
Tunstall Volunteer Fire & Rescue – ($25,000) To purchase a new ambulance to replace a 2000 model ambulance.
Yanceyville Volunteer Fire & Rescue – ($11,500) To purchase and install a hydraulic generator system on our mobile command station for powering communications equipment and compressor for re-filling air bottles.
The Community Foundation’s next grant cycle will begin in June for projects to be funded in 2015.
