Our Donors Make A Difference

Thanks to our donors, we awarded $2.2 million in grants and scholarships throughout the Dan River Region last year alone. What a difference 29 years of giving makes! Other than the fact we’re able to give away more money every year, not much else has changed since The Foundation was established in 1996.

The individuals instrumental in creating The Foundation made sure to put policies in place to ensure our longevity. When we refer to “forever gifts” from donors, we truly mean donations made to The Foundation will make an impact indefinitely. We will continue to award grants and scholarships created by our donors to uplift the most important causes in our region including education, emergency preparedness, human services and arts and culture.

The Dan River Region faces many urgent issues.

  • For every five skilled tradespeople who retire, only one is joining the workforce.
  • The unavailability and cost of housing in our area is outpacing wage growth.
  • One-third of local children are behind in reading at the third-grade level, making them four times more likely to drop out of high school.

To address these, and other concerns, the Change Maker Community Fund was created. This fund is an undesignated, forward-thinking resource that empowers The Foundation to identify and invest in high-impact solutions where they are needed most. Please consider supporting The Change Maker Community Fund during our 29th Year Quality of Life Annual Appeal. Your donation truly makes a difference!

Fund Education: Scholarships

Since 1997, more than 75 scholarship funds have been created by generous donors to benefit students from Danville, Pittsylvania, Halifax and Caswell County, NC. These scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis.

As with our other types of funds – designated, donor advised, field of interest – donors can structure a scholarship to support a wide range of academic, career and personal aspirations for students at any level of education. Our current scholarship funds are as diverse as the students they support. Some scholarships emphasize academic excellence, while others focus on overcoming adversity, service to others or pursuing specific fields of interest. A scholarship may be named in memory or honor of a loved one; this is a special way to carry on the name of someone special.

One of the nice things about starting a scholarship fund at The Foundation is that our staff and board handle all necessary administration to ensure the scholarship is distributed to a qualified student that meets the criteria set up by the donor. This means donors do not have to review applications and decide which worthy student is awarded the scholarship. We take on the work for you!

The first scholarship established at The Foundation was the John Watson Daniel Scholarship Fund (Daniel is pictured on the left.). It is awarded to high school graduates from Danville, Pittsylvania or Caswell counties. Preference is given to descendants of employees or retirees of John W. Daniel Construction Company. This year’s scholarship recipient was Jacob Moore, who attends Hampden-Sydney College.
