Matching Gift Challenge Issued for Fund for Halifax

During the month of May, the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region will hold a matching gift challenge to support the Fund for Halifax. Thanks to a grant approved by the Board of Directors any gifts made to this fund will be matched up to $10,000. The goal of this campaign is to increase the fund’s balance so that organizations in Halifax County can provide more of an impact on the resident of the area.

“Every dollar that is given to the Fund for Halifax is invested and the returns are used to make the grants that are awarded every year,” said Board President Vince Kania, Jr. “We are committed to supporting Halifax County in a meaningful way. The Fund for Halifax provides unrestricted funding for worthy projects that will ensure a lasting legacy of growth and opportunity.”

Since The Foundation was formed 30 years ago, more than $1 million has been distributed to nonprofit organizations in Halifax County. The Fund for Halifax matching gift challenge is a unique opportunity for citizens, organizations and businesses to increase the endowment created to impact residents of Halifax. The Community Foundation continues to encourage donations of all sizes and types as it seeks to further grow the fund.

This year, the Fund for Halifax awarded grants to the following local organizations:

  • Tri County Community Action to support maternal health;
  • The Prizery to support the Creative Pathways Program;
  • Feed More to support the school markets in Halifax County;
  • Southern Virginia Botanical Gardens to support the installation of a well;
  • and Kingdom Warriors to support the annual gleaning program.

Along with the Fund for Halifax, there are several funds that directly support organizations in Halifax including the South Boston Medical Fund; and the Benjamin M. Sugg Fund, which provides support for the Clover Cemetery. In addition, there are currently two scholarships specifically for Halifax County graduates including the Walter and Barbara Bass Scholarship and the Julia Anderson Moss Scholarship Fund. While these funds specifically support the county and its residents, The Foundation holds other funds and scholarships that benefit our whole service area.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region currently manages more than 200 funds, with five that are dedicated solely to funding organizations and scholarships in Halifax.
