Donor-advised funds are the most complex type of fund the Foundation administers. A Donor-advised fund allows a donor to recommend specific charitable projects or organizations they want to support; however, the Foundation is charged with the final responsibility and authority over distributions.

The Free Clinic of Danville Fund (‘19)

To make annual grants from the Fund to nonprofit organizations to provide medical services, including, but not limited to, behavioral health, hearing, speech, dental, screening, and medical education targeting uninsured and underinsured adults (age 19-64) residing in Danville and Pittsylvania County, with preference for those earning less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Veterinary Emergency Treatment (V.E.T.) Fund (‘11)

To work with vets in the Dan River Region to make financial assistance available to give companion animals a chance to remain family members.

Linwood and Peggy Wright Downtown Revitalization Fund (‘21) *Currently an Acorn Fund

To provide support for downtown revitalization efforts within the Dan River Region in memory of Linwood Wright and in honor of Peggy Wright.

Scholarship Funds can be structured to benefit students at any education level, or, eligibility may be available only to students attending a specific institution or studying a single subject. A scholarship fund can be established to honor a loved one. The Community Foundation staff and Board will handle all the necessary administration to ensure that scholarships are distributed equitably.

Adkerson-Dodson Special Education Scholarship Fund (‘12)

To provide scholarships for deserving Danville/Pittsylvania County graduates who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree or licensure in special education.

William E. Barr Scholarship Fund (‘13)

To provide scholarships for Danville-Pittsylvania County graduates attending Hampden-Sydney College.

Bennett-Bushnell-Jones-Kaufmann Scholarship Fund (‘08)

To provide scholarships to second-year nursing students at Danville Community College.

Deputy Frankie Lynn Betterton Scholarship Fund (‘12)

To provide scholarships for deserving Danville/Pittsylvania residents who have a financial need and who are pursuing a law enforcement career.

Sadie Banks Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund (‘21)- *Currently an Acorn Fund

To provide scholarships for African-American graduates of Danville and Pittsylvania County, with a preference for students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), who have demonstrated a devotion to academics, or are otherwise talented, and who have a need for financial support.

James W. Bryant, Sr. and James T. Collie Scholarship Fund (‘05)

To provide scholarships for Pittsylvania County graduates, preferably in the fields of education or nursing.

Bernard C. Calvert Scholarship Fund (‘04)

To provide scholarships for deserving Tunstall High School graduates, preferably students who attended either Brosville or Stony Mill Schools.

Caswell County Schools Scholarship Fund (’21)

To provide post-secondary scholarships to Caswell County Schools’ graduating seniors entering the field of education, who are residents of Caswell County, who have demonstrated a devotion to academics, and who have a need for financial support. The applicants intend to earn a bachelor degree for the purpose of teaching school in Caswell County Schools.

Frank, Mary, and Ray Compton Scholarship Fund ('20)

To provide scholarships to area students, with a preference for Pittsylvania County students who have demonstrated a devotion to academics, or are otherwise talented, and who have a need for financial support.

John Watson Daniel Scholarship Fund (‘97)

To provide scholarships for graduates in Danville, Pittsylvania or Caswell County with a preference for descendants of employees or retirees of John W. Daniel Construction Company.

Steven Bruce Daniels, Jr. Scholarship Fund (’14)

To provide scholarships for Danville-Pittsylvania-Caswell graduates attending either NC State University or Virginia Tech and plans for studying in the field of agriculture or with a high school varsity athletics background.

Danville Academic Boosters Scholarship Fund (‘03)

To provide scholarships for top graduates of Danville Public Schools.

Danville Lions Foundation Scholarship Fund ('16)

To provide scholarships to Danville-Pittsylvania and Caswell County High School graduates who are pursuing a health-related profession, with a preference for those in a graduate level of study, especially those studying sight and speech/hearing professions.

To provide scholarships for Danville Regional Medical Center employees and volunteers and their immediate families who are studying in a medical field.

To provide scholarships for female graduates of public and private schools in Pittsylvania County.

Unrestricted funds are not specifically designated for us by a particular agency, case or area of interest. Our Board of Directors oversees the use of these funds, setting priorities for their use and determining how grants will be distributed to support the charitable needs of our community. Unrestricted funds give us the ability to respond to pressing and changing needs in the community.

Acorn Funds allow individuals, families and organizations to build an endowment over time. Donors are allowed three years to reach the minimum required to establish a permanent endowment at The Community Foundation.

The Community Foundation enters into special Community Partnerships with local organizations after careful consideration. Community Partnerships represent specific agreements where The Community Foundation receives and administers Community Partnership funds that benefit the area.

A church endowment fund gives the opportunity to create a fund that generates investment income, year after year, which can be drawn down in annual payments to the church, or reinvested in the fund to grow over time. Funds can also be established to support nonprofit mission work in the area or the nation or to establish a scholarship to benefit area students. The permanence of an endowment fund is both appealing and reassuring to donors and church boards who seek the enduring value of a dedicated source of income to support the organization they love, today and forever. Through a Church Endowment Fund, your church can establish an endowment fund to support its

  • Participate in The Community Foundation's $35 million investment portfolio as overseen by our Finance Committee of experienced investment, finance, and business professionals. The investment portfolio is well-balanced across 13 different investment manager (Five year average return of 8.0%).
  • Partner with The Community Foundation to leverage its gift planning services to help your church secure and administer bequests and other future planned gifts for your endowment.
