The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region announced today a total of $626,000 in new grants to 51 non-profit community agencies at a reception at the Ballou Recreation Center. The Community Foundation was incorporated in 1996 and has already returned more than $17 million in community grants and scholarships.
This year’s grants contain $250,000 in funding made available by a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation. A complete listing of the grants awarded from the Danville Regional Foundation’s support is below.
The following grants were approved by The Community Foundation’s Distribution Committee and Board of Directors and awarded from various funds as described below:
Alzheimer’s Association, Central & Western Virginia – ($8,000) To fund the Arts Fusion project which aims to enhance the quality of life of persons with dementia and caregivers through creative expression and community outreach. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Animal Protection Society of the Northern Piedmont, Inc. – ($6,250) To install awnings over the outdoor portion of the dog runs and over the front and back doors to the animal shelter. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
SPCA of Pittsylvania County (formerly Animal Welfare League of Pittsylvania County) – ($3,000) To provide temporary housing for the rescued animals by means of boarding in veterinary clinics while awaiting transfer to another rescue organization in Virginia or other state. (Animal Welfare Fund; James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area – ($10,000) To have monthly workshops with industry professionals to cover necessary topics, to host a mini-conference, and to have a back to school picnic at Dan Daniel Park. (Faye Carter Fund)
Casville Volunteer Fire Dept. – ($2,790) To replace aging air pack bottles. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund; Betty Jefferson Fund)
Caswell County Partnership for Children – ($2,500) To help fund an ABCD Coordinator to provide information and technical assistance to medical practice staff to facilitate the referral and tracking of children who may benefit from services. (John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund)
Caswell Emergency Management – ($10,000) To purchase boat equipment to assist in starting a Type III Swift Water Rescue Team in Caswell County. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Caswell Friends of the Library, Inc. – ($2,500) To encourage citizens of all ages to become lifelong learners by offering innovative summer programs and incentives to library users throughout the summer. (John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund)
Chapter 240, Air Force Association – ($2,500) To provide “Matching Grant” funding to Danville city and Pittsylvania County K-12 science teachers. (Clarence L. Giles Fund)
City of Danville – Department of Parks and Recreation – Special Recreation Division – Ballou Recreation Center – Senior Transportation Services – ($10,000) To purchase transportation service for the low income, and often disabled Danville citizens, under the age of 60 years old, to and from the Fresenius Medical Center, to receive the life-saving treatment of dialysis. County Outreach Ministry – ($15,000) To secure a 15 passenger van to transport children to the community center for meals, and transport food from food banks to the community center. (Faith Home Endowment Fund)
Danville Area Choral Arts Society – ($2,000) “Choral Music For All Ages” DACAS plans to present a spring concert of familiar choral selections that will appeal to all ages. (Herbert Sater Fund)
Danville Church Based Tutorial – ($25,000) To provide after-school tutoring to help move students from failing grades to achieving SOL requirements. (Betty Jefferson Fund; Faye Carter Fund)
Danville Community College – Dental Hygiene Department – ($25,000) To replace defective equipment and add additional equipment to allow students to be able to effectively and efficiently treat more clients. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund; Faith Home Fund)
Danville Concert Association – ($3,000) To bring the American Chamber Players to Danville for a full-length public concert and to sponsor an educational outreach opportunity with the five players for student members of the local high school orchestra. Danville Division of Social Services – ($24,000) To provide critical and emergency financial assistance via direct payment to the Danville Utilities Department for restoration and/or reconnection of home utility service for eligible and vulnerable low-income households. (Faith Home Endowment Fund)
Danville Family YMCA – ($15,000) To provide scholarships for children in our community to participate in YMCA Sports Programs. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services – ($19,315) To provide Respite Care funding to help cover costs of short-term respite to benefit youth and adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities and their caregivers. (Faith Home Endowment Fund; Clarence L. Giles Fund)
Feeding America Southwest Virginia – ($10,000) To help feed hungry people in Danville and Pittsylvania County. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
God’s Storehouse – ($5,000) To purchase four new computers to replace those that are currently running Windows XP. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund; Pat & Cathy Daly Fund; Daniel Fund)
Goodwill Industries of South Central Virginia – ($15,000) To expand the janitorial training program to prepare individuals with barriers for competitive careers. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
House of Hope, Inc. – ($9,400) To support a case management initiative that will allow the case manager to work with the homeless individuals and families that pass though the shelter. (The Daniel Fund; Clarence L. Giles Fund)
Transition Pregnancy Solutions, Inc. (formerly Little Life Pregnancy Center) – ($5,800) To improve information technology in order to meet Federal and State laws and regulations regarding privacy of healthcare information and to communicate with patients in a secure manner. (Clarence L. Giles Fund)
Locust Hill United Methodist Church – ($2,500) To purchase a 49 cubic foot double door refrigerator to enhance the feeding program. (John C. Swanson, Jr. Fund)
Mount Hermon Volunteer Fire & Rescue – ($10,000) To support the projected construction cost to build a new Fire/Rescue/EMS Station. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Piedmont Community College Foundation – ($20,000) To enhance the Public Safety Training Center by adding two classrooms and creating an environment more conducive to learning and to purchase a mobile Cell Extraction room. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Pittsylvania Co. Dept. of Social Services – ($20,000) To provide emergency services, such as electric, rent, or heat, to residents of Pittsylvania Co. who are in a crisis situation. (W. Earl & Elise M. G. Allen Fund; Faith Home Fund)

The Arc of Southside – ($60,000) To subsidize the job training program for adults with developmental disabilities. (Faith Home Endowment Fund)
The Free Clinic of Danville – ($3,000) To replace and update dental equipment and to replenish the supplies inventory used in patient care. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund; James Robertson Fund)
Yanceyville Volunteer Fire and Rescue – ($9,470) To replenish air bottles that have

American Red Cross – Piedmont Virginia Chapter – ($10,000) To ensure the Piedmont Virginia Chapter will be able to effectively deliver disaster relief services to the victims of house fires and other disasters in the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County.
Bachelors Hall Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. – ($10,000) To install a Stryker Power-Pro XT gurney (stretcher) into the newly-ordered Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance.
Blairs Fire & Rescue – ($10,000) To purchase thermal imaging cameras and gas detection monitors.
Callands Volunteer Fire and Rescue Inc. – ($9,200) To purchase a stabilization system to be used for vehicle, agricultural, and construction accidents.
Caswell County Parish – ($15,000) To assist clients in financial need or hardship due to hard economical struggles with utility assistance cut off notices, oil, wood, heating/cooling.
Climax Volunteer Fire Dept. – ($10,000) To replace a defective pump on a 2002 Brush Truck.
Danville Cancer Association, Inc. – ($25,000) To enable clients to have access to quality health care by assisting them with the high cost of their cancer-related prescriptions.
Danville Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity – ($9,000) To purchase a box truck.
Danville Science Center – ($20,000) To bring world-class traveling exhibits to the Science Center.
Danville Speech & Hearing Center – ($27,500) To fund Client short falls and to obtain remote access to electronic health record software. (James Russell & Zora Carter Anderson Fund)
Institute for Advanced Learning and Research Foundation – ($20,000) To purchase a larger mobile STEM unit that can accommodate 25 individuals at one time, improving the ability to serve a greater number of citizens.
Keeling Volunteer Fire Department – ($10,000) To purchase a Kubota RTV1140CPX utility vehicle, a FS-60 custom built lightweight foam unit and an enclosed 8’x24′ trailer.
Kentuck Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. – ($10,000) To purchase and install an emergency backup generator.
Northern Pittsylvania County Food Center – ($15,000) To provide food to those in need in the northern portion of Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
Pelham Volunteer Fire Department – ($10,000) To help convert a vehicle into a Brush Fire Vehicle.
Providence Fire & Rescue Inc. – ($10,000) To replace and upgrade our current extrication tools.
Riceville Java Volunteer Fire Department – ($10,000) To purchase a new fire apparatus with 1000gpm pump and 3000 gallon water tank.
