RiverBank Fund to Receive Funding

On April 14th it was announced that The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region (CFDRR) will receive a second $250,000 gift from Duke Energy in support of the RiverBank Fund earmarked for the protection and revitalization of the Dan River.

The announcement was one of several gifts announced by Duke from their Water Resources Fund. The Rockingham County Community Foundation will also receive a second round of funding.

The RiverBank Fund is a special initiative to celebrate and revitalize the Dan and to offer the long-term care and appreciation the River deserves. Long-term support is still being sought from residents and businesses from Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania, Halifax, Mecklenburg counties (VA) and Stokes, Caswell, Rockingham counties (NC), as well as the City of Danville and beyond, who want the Dan River and its tributaries to thrive. The Community Foundation is currently managing eight grant awards totaling $237,500 from the RiverBank Fund. This new Duke Energy gift will allow for a second round of grant applications to open this summer.

 

Eligible grant programs will have to address at least one of the five focus areas:

  1. Responsibly address water quality for regional residents and companies.
  2.  

  3. Encourage new development that ecologically features the River.
  4.  

  5. Improve the cleanliness of the River and the Basin and help protect it from environmental threats.
  6.  

  7. Increase access to the River for family-friendly sports, recreation and entertainment.
  8.  

  9. Effectively promote the River to build regional pride and encourage tourism.
  10.

A regional advisory committee has been formed to help guide the development of the fund and the strategic disbursement of grant funds.

The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is a public 501c3 charity that serves a region from Martinsville/Henry County through Mecklenburg County in Virginia as well as the neighboring North Carolina counties. The footprint of the Foundation and its experience in administering grant funds allowed the RiverBank Fund to be established quickly and efficiently.
